Kamehameha rebounds by
shutting out Maryknoll

The Warriors’ win helps them hang
onto second place in the ILH

Erik Price pitched seven innings of five-hit baseball, and Ryson Mauricio drove in four runs as No. 2 Kamehameha routed Maryknoll 7-0 in a critical game for the Warriors, who maintained their hold on second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings and on a potential playoff berth.

The Warriors (29-7,14-3) entered yesterday's game with the Spartans (3-14) trailing the ILH-leading and No. 15 nationally ranked Punahou Buffanblu by 1 1/2 games. On the previous night, Kamehameha lost 6-5 to Saint Louis, with the Crusaders' go-ahead run coming on a Warriors pitching error. The loss narrowed the Warriors' lead over Mid-Pacific (22-10, 12-5) and weakened their position for a playoff spot.

"We're not thinking about that," Kamehameha head coach Vern Ramie said. "We still have five games left, including Mid-Pac and Punahou -- a tough road ahead."

Kamehameha beat Punahou 4-3 earlier in the season, but after the collapse against Saint Louis, the Warriors have re-emphasized their attention to detail.

"We realize we can't afford to lose games, especially the ones we're suppose to win. And after last night's game, we have the attitude that we have to get it done," Price said. "It showed us we're not there yet."

The Warriors cemented yesterday's victory with a four-run fourth inning that was capped by senior second baseman Mauricio's three-run homer.

"We know we have to work hard and keep on winning," Mauricio said. "We won't worry about (Friday); we've put it behind us. This was a key win, and hopefully we can continue it."

Yesterday was Ramie's fourth game at the helm since returning from surgery to his left eye, which he needed after being injured during batting practice. He returned after two weeks with his vision restored to 20/20.

"Every game in this last round is a big game," Ramie said. "Last night was a great game and we had our opportunities. Today we beat a scrappy and underrated Maryknoll team. Our goal is to focus and come out and play well. We did that today. We've got to continue."
