Bruins drop Rainbow Wahine

The top-ranked UCLA water polo team defeated No. 4 Hawaii 10-5 yesterday in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship at Berkeley, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine face No. 2 USC today in the third-place match while UCLA advances to the final against Stanford.

Anna Sieprath's goal 61 seconds into the game gave Hawaii an 1-0 lead, but UCLA responded with four straight goals.

Trailing 7-2 in the second half, Hawaii scored three straight to close to 7-5 with 5 minutes left in the game. UCLA then scored three goals over the next 3 minutes.

Beth Novick led UH with two goals while teammate Meike De Nooy finished with 11 saves.

Young leads UH relay teams at Drake

Sophomore Kelly Young helped the University of Hawaii relay teams place third and ninth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley and the 4x800 on the final day of the 96th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, yesterday.

Young ran a 2:09.9 split to anchor the UH team in the 1,600-meter sprint. The Rainbow Wahine clocked a time of 3:57.92, shattering the record of 4:20.80 set earlier this year. Later in the day, Young ran a second-leg split of 2:05 in the 4x800 to bring the 'Bows from 30 meters behind to lead. Hawaii finished in ninth place with a time of 9:02.42.

Also yesterday, Novelle Murray and Patricia Gauthier led a separate UH team at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

Murray finished second in the hammer throw and third in the discus while Gauthier tied for third in the pole vault with a height of 3.8 meters.

Football tryouts for Team USA Hawaii

A group of Hawaii football coaches are forming Team USA Hawaii to compete against a top team from Japan on July 14 in the Tokyo Dome.

Tryouts are today at Kaimuki High School's football field for players 21-35 only. Check-in is 1:30 p.m.

The Japanese team is from the X League, which is comprised of club and corporate teams.

Former Kaimuki High coach Ronald Oyama is the head coach. He'll be assisted by head and assistant coaches from around the state, including Darren Hernandez of Kapolei, Wendell Look of Iolani, Wendell Say of Aiea, Nelson Maeda of Castle and Kale Ane of Punahou.

Davis, prep coaches at Quarterback Club

University of Hawaii assistant football coach Mouse Davis and two prep girls basketball coaches will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Punahou coach Mike Taylor and Radford coach David Lane will be part of the program that starts at noon. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel ballroom.

Local wrestlers fourth at nationals

Two wrestlers from Hawaii finished fourth at the U.S. Senior Nationals yesterday in Las Vegas.

Katie Kunimoto, a 1999 Castle graduate, competed for the Gator Wrestling Club in the 48-kilogram weight class. Donnell Bradley, a 1999 Radford graduate, placed in the 72 kg class.
