Rainbow Wahine advance to semifinals

Sophomore Anna Sieprath scored four goals, the last coming in overtime, as the fourth-seeded Rainbow Wahine water polo team defeated No. 5 Long Beach State 8-7 yesterday in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships at Berkeley, Calif.

Monika Kruszona added two goals and Darcy Scott-Hosaka and Shannon Carroll each added one as the Wahine advanced to a semifinal showdown with top-seeded UCLA today at 11 a.m. The Wahine lost both games to the Bruins this year.

Hawaii breaks record at Drake Relays

The Hawaii track and field team broke the school record in the distance medley relay yesterday during the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

Kelly Young, Tasha Monroe, Heather Scott, and Dana Buchanan teamed to finish in sixth place with a record time of 11:31.57. Michigan won the event with a time of 11:10.80.

Meanwhile, Young also finished second in the 800-meter run and Jessica Rohr set a personal best in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.87.

The event concludes today.

Hawaii qualifies for ICSA Nationals

The Hawaii coed sailing team finished second at the Pacific Coast Championship Team Race yesterday in Long Beach, Calif., qualifying the Rainbows for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Team Race National Championships.

Hawaii finished the event with a 9-4 record and will be making its fifth straight appearance in the ICSA Nationals. The Rainbows are currently ranked 20th in the nation by collegesailing.org.

Torres places fifth at Senior Nationals

Kahuku graduate Kapua Torres placed fifth in the 51 kilogram weight class at the U.S. Senior Nationals yesterday in Las Vegas.

Torres, a sophomore at Pacific University, beat two other Hawaii wrestlers on her way to a 4-2 mark. She defeated Castle graduate Tanya Miyasaki of Missouri Valley in the consolation bracket and beat Mililani's Debbi Sakai, representing the New York Athletic Club, in the fifth-place match.

Castle graduate Kristin Fujioka will compete for Pacific at the 48 kg class today.
