Kalaheo's Taylor Smith scored 18 points last night.

Kalaheo clips Kahuku

This time, Kalaheo got major horsepower from its bench.

Randi Farstad and Kathleen Hicks provided major contributions in the second half to help the Lady Mustangs outrun Kahuku 66-55 last night in Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division basketball at Kalaheo Gym.

After a run-and-gun tempo early on, the pace slowed somewhat in the second half. Down 51-50, leading scorer Taylor Smith came out of the game and Farstad went back in. She scored on consecutive layups to help Kalaheo regain the lead. Then, the senior pulled down a rebound, dribbled to the sideline and fired a pass to Shanadee Canon for another bucket, giving Kalaheo a 58-51 lead with 1:53 left.

Farstad added another layup with 52 seconds left as the Lady Mustangs took a 60-53 lead.

"It was fun. I wanted to show Coach (Chico Furtado) what I can do," she said. "As a bench we can show him and other people that we're part of the team."

Kalaheo (17-4) improved to 10-1 in the East, just one win behind Kahuku. The Lady Raiders (17-3) closed their regular season at 11-1. If Kalaheo wins its final regular-season game against Kaiser, the Lady Mustangs finish in a tie with Kahuku.

The No. 1 seed in the East would then be determined by a coin flip. That will be a big factor since the East No. 1 seed hosts the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The championship game is scheduled for McKinley Gym.

Smith, who struggled from the field in a loss at Kahuku on April 2, was nearly unstoppable last night. The Pepperdine-bound senior finished with 18 points on a mix of left- and right-handed shots. The 5-foot-10 forward also hauled in nine rebounds.

Canon, a junior guard, added 14 points.

Farstad didn't play in the first half, but finished with eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Her energy and athleticism proved too much for Kahuku to handle late in the game, especially since Lady Raider power forward Aisha Ale sat out with a hyperextended right knee.

"I told our kids, 'Don't let your guard down,' " Furtado said.

Camilla Ah-Hoy paced Kahuku with 14 points. Kamaile Hughes added 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Ane Vea and Tina Soliai chipped in 11 points apiece. Vea, starting in place of Ale, grabbed nine boards. Guard Artevia Wily struggled, scoring six points on 2-for-19 accuracy.

As a team, Kahuku shot 30 percent from the field (17-for-57) against Kalaheo's 2-3 zone and occasional fullcourt pressure. Kahuku shot 14 percent (2-for-14) from 3-point range.

Kalaheo shot 48 percent from the field, a far cry from its accuracy in the first matchup. Smith was just 3-for-14 in a loss at Kahuku. This time, she was too quick on baseline drives and penetration through the middle.

"We played well, but we really missed Aisha's leadership," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said. "The kids are more comfortable and confident when she's on the floor."
