UH baseball to open early tomorrow night

The Les Murakami Stadium box office will open at 5 p.m. tomorrow to accomodate the Hawaii baseball team's student "Perfect Attendance Promotion" for its game against Nevada.

Students in the eighth grade and under who have not missed a day of school this year will receive free admission to the game and make a pregame appearance on the field with the Rainbows.

UH's DeBartolo 20th at Drake Relays

Hawaii freshman Bianca DeBartolo set a Rainbow Wahine heptathlon record in the 100-meter hurdles and stood in 20th place in the six-event competition heading into today's second day at the Drake Relays.

DeBartolo also completed in the high jump and 200 meters yesterday. Today she is expected to close out the event by competing in the long jump, javelin and 800.

Rainbow Wahine Kelly Young, Dana Buchanan, Tasha Monroe, Jessica Rohr, Sheena Thain and Heather Scott are also scheduled to compete at the prestigious meet in Des Moines, Iowa.

HPU sweeps Chaminade in softball

Hawaii Pacific (31-15) took two yesterday in a softball doubleheader with Chaminade (10-37) at Sea Warrior Field.

Officially the visitor, HPU used three runs in the top of the seventh to seal a 6-2 win in game 1. Kara Wedemeyer had three hits for the Sea Warriors.

In the second game, Jamie Reyes and Kellie Nishikida had two hits each and Brandi Peiler rang up her 11th victory as the Sea Warriors won 5-1.

Anina Quaranto and Kristin Prokop had Chaminade's only two hits.

Rainbow Wahine open MPSF tourney at No. 4

Hawaii opens today's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo championship tournament ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation.

The Rainbow Wahine were scheduled to play Pacific this morning in the tournament's opener at California's Spieker Aquatic Complex.

Hawaii is No. 4 in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 20 despite a loss to Southern California on Sunday. UCLA remains No. 1, followed by USC, Stanford and Hawaii.

Heisman winner Kazmaier headlines banquet

Coach Larry Ginoza and contributor Bert Kobayashi will be honored and Heisman Trophy winner Richard Kazmaier will speak May 1 at the Hawaii Chapter 242 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame scholar-athlete banquet.

In addition, 12 high school seniors will be awarded $1,000 scholarships for their football careers and leadership, academic achievement and community contributions.

KHNL/KFVE general manager John Fink will serve as emcee. Kazmaier won the Heisman in 1951 while at Princeton. He is the last Ivy Leaguer to win the award.
