Double happiness

Leeann and Katie Chin, the mother-daughter hosts of the PBS series "Double Happiness" will hold a cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. next Wednesday at the Sub-Zero/Wolf Showroom.

Their appearance is one in a series of free demonstrations planned to mark the first anniversary of the showroom.

Chef Carol Nardello will continue the demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. May 6, 9 and 10, preparing recipes from the Chins' cookbook, "Everyday Chinese Cooking" (Clarkson Potter 2000).

Leeann Chin is the chef/owner of 47 restaurants and grocery stores in the Midwest, under the name Leeann Chin Chinese Cuisine. Her daughter teamed up with her to form Double Happiness Catering in Los Angeles and to create the cooking show, which was filmed in a private home in Honolulu.

In their demonstration they will make several types of dim sum and Firecracker Shrimp. Nardello's demonstrations will feature Stir-Fried Chicken with Red Curry Sauce, Honey Barbecued Pork and Beef Chow Fun.

All the one-hour demonstrations are limited to 25 people, so reservations are required. Call 597-1647 by Monday.

Chocolate for Mom

Children can make a box of chocolates by hand at the Menehune Mac factory in a fund-raiser for the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation.

Children must be at least age 7 and accompanied by an adult (one adult may bring two kids).

Appointments are being taken for 60-minute sessions, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and May 7. Cost is $8. Call 841-3344.

The factory is at 707A Waiakamilo Road in Kalihi.

Culinary scholarship

David Paul's Lahaina Grill is offering a $2,000 culinary scholarship to a graduating senior from a Maui public high school.

Students interested in a culinary career and who plan to attend Maui Community College's Culinary Arts Program in the fall may apply through their school counselors.

Criteria for selection includes academic achievement, community service and interest in cooking. Improvement in grades throughout the four years of high school is also a plus.

In the raw

Learn to grow sprouts and use them in raw-food snacks at a workshop from 10 a.m. to noon May 7 at the Green House, 224 Pakohana St. in Pauoa Valley.

Teaching the class will be Beth Dover and Christopher Mills, educational directors of IKOH Gardens in Waimanalo, a working and teaching farm,

Cost is $10, which includes a how-to booklet. Call 524-8427.

Cooking basics

Chef-instructor Grant Sato will teach two May classes in his Cooking Fundamentals series at Kapiolani Community College.

Each class begins with a lecture, followed by a cooking demonstration and hands-on cooking.

Classes are from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Registration runs three weeks in advance. Call 734-9211.

Braising: Learn this slow-cooking technique. May 7; $55.
Sandwiches: Covers wraps, hot and cold sandwiches and how to dress them up. May 14; $50.
