‘Way to go, Terry!’

CONGRATULATIONS, TERRY!: University of Hawaii-Manoa professor Tamara Hunt Montgomery, second from left, talked during intermission with director Terence Knapp, wearing leis, as Knapp's revival of "Twelf Nite o' WATEVA!" opened a two-weekend run at Kennedy Theatre on Friday. Knapp, the mainstay of the university's Shakespeare program for decades, is retiring after 35 years. He directed the world premiere of James Grant Benton's pidgin "translation" of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night, or What You Will" in 1974. Montgomery enjoyed "Twelf Nite" on Friday with her husband, Cliff Montgomery, right, and daughter, actress Gwen Montgomery.

TALKING SHAKESPEARE: R. Kevin Doyle, right, conferred with director Terence Knapp before curtain time. Doyle, associate director of the production, has also been bringing Knapp's Shakespearean legacy into the 21st century as one of the three directors of the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival.

1 PRINCE, 3 CLOWNS: Alvin Chan, left, was still in makeup as hard-drinking Count Opu-Nui when the "Twelf Nite o' WATEVA" cast began celebrating backstage after the opening-night show. Troy M. Apostol (Malolio) and Jabez Sky Armodia (Lope) also have colorful clownish roles. David Jonathan, right, plays superficial, love-besotted Prince Amalu.

THE LADIES JOIN THE PARTY: Noelle Poole, second from left, and Jamy L.N. Torres came to the men's dressing room after they finished changing. Travis Kekoa Tamashiro, left, and Savada J. Gilmore welcomed them to the party. The comic characters were obviously audience favorites, but Poole was an appealing romantic lead as Princess Mahealani (Olivia in Shakespeare's version).

"LIVIN' ON-A EASY": Jordan "Valentino" Caires, front, provided the music as Frank Katasse, left, Jay Castillo, Noelle Poole, David Jonathan and Jamy L.N. Torres chilled. Hawaiian and hapa-haole music is a prominent part of Terence Knapp's staging of "Twelf Nite o' WATEVA," and "Livin' on-a Easy," recorded years back by Atta Isaacs and Gabby Pahinui, fits one scene perfectly.
