OIA BASKETBALL

Pearl City bounces back

Crystal Tadeo scored 12 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, as Pearl City outlasted Mililani 36-31 last night at the Lady Trojans' gym.

Pearl City (8-13) improved to 5-6 in Oahu Interscholastic Association West play.

"This was big coming off that loss to Leilehua," Lady Chargers coach Mike Morton said. "Crystal didn't play well in that game, but she played hard tonight."

Mililani knew what to expect in this rematch with Pearl City, but continued to struggle offensively without injured starters Yvonne Morris and Lori Nonies.

"We saw them against Leilehua," Mililani coach Scott DeSilva said. "But we got caught on their screens. They hit those 3-pointers and that was the game. Plus, they must've shot about 85 percent from the line."

Tadeo sank a trey from the left corner as the visitors went on a 9-0 run to seize control early in the fourth quarter. Pearl City figured out Mililani's extended 1-2-2 zone, swinging the ball around the perimeter to find open shots for Tadeo.

With Tiffany Manning and Mele Laulea setting picks, Pearl City finally pulled away. A free throw by Tazha Passi gave the Chargers a 27-20 lead with 6:17 remaining.

Mililani (8-14) didn't help itself as it dropped to 2-8 in league play, committing four key turnovers during the Pearl City run. The Lady Trojans pulled within 30-25 on a free throw by Christina Korodan, but Pearl City was efficient from the foul line. The Chargers sank 10 of their 14 attempts, including eight in a row.

Four of those free throws came from their point guard, Tadeo. Passi and Lindsay Cartwright sank the other four free throws during the Chargers' streak at the line, giving Pearl City a 36-29 lead with 24 seconds left to ice the win.

"We're gonna be in the playoffs, but we want to go into it with momentum," Morton said.
