Police charge suspect after dive in Ala Wai

Honolulu police have charged a man who allegedly rammed a police vehicle with his own car several times and hit other cars in Waikiki before jumping into the Ala Wai Canal Sunday morning.

Shannon V. Smith, 22, was charged Monday with first-degree criminal property damage.

Police said the incident started about 7:50 a.m. when an officer cited a white Lexus that was parked the wrong way in front of a driveway on one-way Kapuni Street. The officer then saw the suspect get into the vehicle and drive off, police said.

Minutes later the officer heard a crash on nearby Nohonani Street and rushed to the scene of an accident, which involved the same Lexus, police said.

In an effort to get away, Smith rammed the police vehicle three times and then hit two other cars, according to police.

Smith escaped by "wedging" the Lexus between a Ford Probe and Chevrolet Celebrity, according to a police affidavit.

Smith got out of the vehicle after abandoning it in a parking garage at 2303 Ala Wai Blvd., police said. Smith then ran across Ala Wai Boulevard, jumped into the canal and tried to swim away but got tired and came back to shore, police said.

He was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Police seek 2 males in Mililani robbery

Police are looking for two male teenagers involved in a Mililani home invasion Friday, robbing a 60-year-old woman.

The woman opened her front door about 8:20 p.m. Friday to walk her dog when two masked teens confronted her, police said.

The suspects fled in the woman's vehicle, which was recovered two hours later a few miles away, police said.

The suspects are described as between 15 and 19 years old, between 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 120 pounds with slim builds and black, straight neck-length hair. They wore dark-colored bandannas and dark clothing, police said.

Police recovered a Quiksilver T-shirt left at the woman's home, which investigators believe might have been worn by or used by one of the suspects during the robbery.
