Kahuku rolls to 9-0 by
beating Farrington

The Big Red Machine is humming along.

Artevia Wily scored 13 points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds as Kahuku rolled over Farrington 59-29 last night at the Lady Governors' gym.

Kahuku (15-2), ranked No. 4 in the Star-Bulletin Girls Basketball Top 10, improved to 9-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play. Farrington (11-7) slipped to 3-6 with a loss to another ranked team.

"It was a buzz saw again. It's like they're on a mission," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said of the visiting Lady Raiders. "I like what our girls did. They didn't give up."

Kamaile Hughes continued to be a huge X factor for Kahuku. The 5-foot-11 softball standout scored 11 points, all in the first half. Aisha Ale hustled for eight points, six boards and three blocked shots.

Camilla Ah-Hoy chipped in with eight points and five assists.

The Lady Raiders shot 48 percent from the field (25 of 52) against Farrington's 2-3 zone and man-to-man defenses. Ten of their 11 baskets in the first half came on assists. Wily shot 5-for-9 from the field and had just three turnovers.

Kahuku committed just 13 turnovers in all. Early on, however, the game was relatively even.

The Lady Governors got into the bonus late in the first quarter, but didn't take advantage. A 3-pointer by C'ani Kealoha from the top of the key tied the game at 11 early in the second quarter. Kahuku responded with a turnaround bank shot by Hughes and four quick points by Wily.

Kahuku switched out of its man defense to 1-3-1 and 2-3 zones in the final 3:49 of the half. Farrington missed four free-throw attempts in a row, igniting a 7-0 run by the visitors. Ah-Hoy drained an open 3-pointer from the right wing and Hughes swished two foul shots as Kahuku opened a 29-16 lead late in the half.

Farrington struggled in the third quarter, going 7 minutes without scoring while committing five more turnovers. Kahuku's 11-0 run put the game out of reach.

Kapio Alatasi led Farrington with eight points. Farrington shot 21 percent from the floor against the taller Lady Raiders. With center Bryanna Tatupu-Leopoldo out with an ankle injury, the Govs were outrebounded 35-22.

"Their guards are bigger than ours, and they threw over our traps," Tumaneng said.

"They looked in playoff form already."

Farrington goes on the road for three crucial games. Six of the seven teams in the East will qualify for the playoffs, which gives the Govs a decent shot at a playoff berth.

"Hopefully, we can keep our spirits up and get ready for these next three games," Tumaneng said.

The East has secured all state berths in the OIA for the past two years.
