Kauai Healing Garden
looks at health plants

Hawaii's nutritional and medicinal
plants will be in the spotlight

The Hawaii Health Guide will present the Kauai Healing Garden, a series of events and workshops that celebrate Hawaii's multicultural medicinal and nutritional plants, Saturday to April 30.

A Healing Garden Symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Aloha Beach Resort in Kapaa. Healing uses of Chinese, Filipino, Ayurvedic and Polynesian/Hawaiian botanical remedies will be presented by cultural practitioners and speakers. The cost is $65 for early registration, including lunch; $75 the day of the event. Seating is limited.

Other events will include:

» April 24, Kauai Earth Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nawiliwili Bay Park, a free festival of music, food, entertainment and educational booths focused on a healthy Kauai and planet. Authors, artists and healers will be present.

» April 25, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Limahuli Garden Tour, Haena, North Shore; cost is $30, including lunch. Reservations are recommended. Besides touring the 17-acre National Tropical Botanical Garden and forest preserve, guest lectures will be presented on gathering rights, watershed and traditional land use and cultivation techniques.

» April 26, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Chinese Medicines Workshop, Kahuna Valley Wailua Homesteads. Cost is $45; reservations recommended. Featuring an opportunity to study with John Renna, Oahu Chinese acupuncturist and herbalist.

» April 27, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ayurvedic "Cooking for Health" Class, Kapaa Seventh-day Adventist Church (a dedicated vegetarian kitchen). Cost is $35, including lunch. Reservations required.

» April 28, "Organic Farming, Kauai Style," 9:30 a.m. to noon, Wootens Farm, Anatolia. Cost is $10. Visit an organic farm near Anahola and learn about successful organic growing.

» April 30, Filipino "Cooking for Health" Class, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Waimea Boys & Girls Club kitchen. Cost $20, including lunch. Reservations recommended.
