Asao maintains lead

Norman Asao fired a second round 1-over 73, but still leads heading into today's third round of the Mid-Pacific Open at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

John Lynch is one shot back at 2-under for the tournament while Brian Sasada moved into third place after firing a 4-under 68, the low round of the day.

Rainbow Wahine rally past Anteaters

Iefke Van Belkum scored three of her game-high four goals during a key third-quarter run as the No. 4 Hawaii water polo team defeated No. 11 UC Irvine 9-6 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Irvine, Calif., yesterday.

After the game was tied 4-all at halftime, Van Belkum scored three straight in the third to help Hawaii take over the match. UC Irvine's Nikki Frish closed the deficit to 7-5 on her goal in the third but Hawaii closed out the match with two goals from Monika Kruszona in the fourth quarter.

Hawaii (14-6, 9-2 MPSF) begins play at the Long Beach Tournament with two matches today.

Murray, Young leads UH at Mt. SAC

Novelle Murray and Kelly Young won their respective events for the University of Hawaii track and field team at the Mt. SAC Relays at Walnut, Calif.

Young won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.76 while Murray won the discus throw with a toss of 52.20 meters. Tasha Monroe qualified for the NCAA West Regionals with her second-place finish of 5.99 meters in the long jump.

Also yesterday, UH sent another contingent to the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Pomona, Calif. Meghan Weaver set a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 14.66. Competing at both meets were Weaver, Monroe, Murray and Patricia Gauthier.

Coogan shuts out Miners

Melissa Coogan fired a two-hitter and Ashley Ruff hit a two-run home run as the Hawaii softball team blanked UTEP 9-0 at El Paso, Texas yesterday.

Coogan's win was her fifth shut out of the year as she struck out five and walked two in a game called after six innings.

Hawaii (24-20, 5-5 Western Athletic Conference) and UTEP (17-26, 3-4) finish the three-game WAC series with a doubleheader today at Helen of Troy Field.
