Service remembers accomplished leader

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific for the former leader of Greek Orthodox Christians in the Western Hemisphere.

The 11 a.m. service will honor Archbishop Iakovos, who died Sunday in Stamford, Conn., at the age of 93. Iakovos championed religious unity and human rights during his 37 years as head of the American branch of the international church. He met with Pope John XXIII in 1959, the first Orthodox archbishop to meet with a Roman Catholic pope in 350 years. He marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1965 Selma, Ala., march and received the Medal of Freedom from President Jimmy Carter in 1980. He was president of the World Council of Churches for nine years.

The archbishop visited Hawaii Orthodox Christians on three occasions. He officiated at the consecration of the church building at 930 Lunalilo St. as a Greek Orthodox cathedral in November 1990. He retired in 1996.

Monday is the deadline for reservations. Tickets are $100, half of which is tax-deductible. Tables of 10 can also be reserved in a variety of price ranges. Call 734-8979.

The honorees are:

» Brother Patrick Hughes, a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts, Class of 1937.

» Russell Valente, St. Louis School dean of admissions, Class of 1975.

The evening event will feature entertainment by comedian Frank De Lima and others, and a silent auction. It will benefit the St. Patrick's capital campaign, which is raising funds to build a preschool, new computer lab and library.

Ohana Fair features family entertainment

There will be a petting zoo and pony rides for children next Saturday at the St. Francis School Ohana Fair.

The fair, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds at 2707 Pamoa Road, will provide entertainment for older folks, too. The all-day program will feature music by the Kahoano brothers, Kalena, Most High and No Limitz, as well as performances by students from the Performing Arts Academy and St. Francis School.

Home-style food and fresh produce will be on sale, and a variety of items and services will be offered in a silent auction.

Proceeds from the fair will benefit school projects.
