Yellowjackets sweep Vulcans in softball

Montana State-Billings swept a doubleheader from Hawaii-Hilo 7-5 and 11-6 yesterday in Montana.

Lisa Jackson cracked her third home run of the season in the opening-game loss for the Vulcans (28-8, 13-3 Pacific West Conference), while teammate Haunani Haasenritter hit a solo homer in the second game.

The Yellowjackets improved to 25-11 and 8-4.

Irvine stops Warriors in tennis

UC Irvine dropped Hawaii 6-1 in collegiate men's tennis yesterday in California.

The Anteaters (11-8) swept the doubles matches and suffered just one defeat in singles, when the Warriors' Ryan Sceats rallied to beat Victor Lamm 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

Hawaii dropped to 6-12.

Weaver qualifies for NCAA regionals

Hawaii freshman Meghan Weaver qualified for the NCAA track and field regionals by throwing 14.56 in the shot put Saturday at the Meet of Champions hosted by Azusa Pacific in California.

Weaver finished second in the event. She is the third Rainbow Wahine athlete to qualify for the regionals this year. Kelly Young (800 meters) and Novelle Murray (discus) qualified previously.

Hornets take series from Vulcans in baseball

Left-hander Matt Campbell scattered four hits in 6 2/3 innings to lead Sacramento State past Hawaii-Hilo 4-1 in college baseball yesterday at Hornet Field in Sacramento.

Marshall Plouffe earned his third save of the season. He came in with a runner on first with one out in the eighth and retired five of the next six batters.

The Vulcans (3-33) were led by Sean Tamura, who drove in Gary Ahu Jr. with the team's only run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Aiea's James Strombach went 2-for-4 for the Hornets (12-20-1).

USA Track and Field meet coming up

A USA Track and Field meet for open and masters competitors is at the University of Hawaii's Cooke Field on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The meet is open to ages 10 and older and will include competition in open and masters age groups in increments of 5 years.

All members must be participants of USATF.

The meet is also a tune-up for the USATF national masters meet at Cooke Field, Aug. 4-7.
