HAWAII
Seminars tell how to put on a festival

The Hawaii Tourism Authority is sponsoring a series of seminars next month on how to successfully stage and promote a festival or event.

Both local and national experts will be on hand to present information at the full-day workshops, which will cover how to seek sponsorships, build brand identity, market effectively and capitalize on travel trends.

Open to anyone at $25 per person, the seminars will be:

» May 3, at the Hawaii Convention Center on Oahu;
» May 4, at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort on the Big Island;
» May 5, at the Marriott Resort & Beach Club on Kauai;
» May 6, at the Wailea Marriott Resort on Maui.

A tourism authority spokesman said promoting festivals falls under the authority's product-development initiative, which aims to provide diverse and enriching experiences for visitors.

For a complete list of programs supported by the authority, visit its Web site at www.hawaii.gov/tourism.

'Life science' has Japanese angle

"Life science" experts from the United States and Japan will be featured at a seminar later this month on Japan's life science market.

The April 21 event will run from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and is sponsored by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, the Japan External Trade Organization and the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce.

"Hawaii has a tremendous potential to grow the life science industry, and we believe Japan could be a logical partner," said Theodore Liu, DBEDT director.

Dennis Ling, administrator of the department's strategic marketing and support division, said life sciences, "broadly speaking, ... include companies and organizations that are involved in research, development, technology transfer and commercialization in fields such as biology, medicine, biotech, pharmaceuticals, environmental, nutraceuticals, marine science and agriculture."

Speakers at the seminar will include Richard Anthony, president of Catalyst Pharmaceutical Research LLC of Pasadena, Calif.; Hitoshi Tomizawa, director of executive medical services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Group in Los Angeles; and Keizo Tsuchiya, the Japan trade organization's chief executive in Los Angeles.
