Three people are killed on
Oahu while a Maui crash
leaves a motorcyclist dead

Separate traffic accidents on Hawaii's roads yesterday left four men dead, a woman in critical condition and three others, including a 9-year-old girl and an infant, seriously hurt, police said.

The most serious crash happened when a man driving a 2000 green Toyota pickup truck going the wrong way on the H-1 freeway collided with a 1991 Toyota pickup at 1:16 a.m. near the Military Road Overpass in Kunia.

The 33-year-old driver of the wrong-way truck and the 28-year-old driver of the 1991 Toyota were both pronounced dead at the scene. Three passengers in the 1991 pickup were taken to the Queen's Medical Center: a 26-year-old woman reported in critical condition and a 9-year-old girl and 1-year-old boy in serious condition.

Police said speed and alcohol may have been factors in the accident.

A 56-year-old woman driving a 2001 yellow Ford Mustang was also taken to Queen's in fair condition after her car hit the rear of the 1991 pickup after the initial collision, police said.

A second fatal crash on Oahu happened yesterday about 4:08 p.m. on Farrington Highway near Kahe Beach Park when a 1988 gold Audi sedan hit a man standing outside a parked car.

Police said a 26-year-old man driving the Audi was traveling eastbound on Farrington Highway when the car hit a 43-year-old Nanakuli man, who was leaning into the trunk of a white Dodge Neon parked on the right shoulder of the roadway.

Police said the victim was taken to St. Francis West Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The 26-year-old driver, also of Nanakuli, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in guarded condition.

The three deaths bring the traffic fatalities on Oahu this year to 25, compared to 19 at the same time last year, police said.

On Maui, a crash at 6:33 a.m. left a motorcyclist dead.

The accident happened on Honoapiilani Highway northbound at the intersection of Halelo Street when a man driving a 2004 Nissan Titan pickup truck ran a red light and hit a black and yellow 1997 Honda motorcycle, police said.

The motorcycle driver, identified as Rolf E. Schlosser of Lahaina, was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition. He later died of his injuries.

Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured.

It's still unclear whether speed and alcohol were factors in the collision.

The death is the second traffic fatality in Maui County this year, compared to six at the same time last year, police said.
