New-found freedom lifts
Kalaheo over Kaiser

The Kaiser Cougars got caught in a hurricane from the Windward side.

Shanadee Canon poured in 21 points and Taylor Smith added 18, but there were many more factors that figured in Kalaheo's 69-44 win last night at Kaiser's gym.

Kalaheo (12-4), ranked sixth in the Star-Bulletin Girls Basketball Top 10, improved to 5-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division. Coach Chico Furtado was pleased, especially after giving his players more freedom than ever.

"We decided as a staff to let them go a little bit. I think I've handcuffed them too much. They worry about getting their okoles chewed out," he said. "I told them before the game, this is the day we transpose this team to you guys."

Kaiser (10-5) slipped to 4-2 in the league. The seventh-ranked Lady Cougars shot just 27 percent from the field (12 of 45) against Kalaheo's relentless fullcourt press and halfcourt man-to-man defenses.

Kalaheo got plenty of help from Kaliko Kepa, who had 10 points and seven rebounds. The senior forward provided lots of strong defense on the low post against Kaiser's 1-2 combo of Kilioe Aliifua and Sharde Pratt.

Aliifua, a 5-foot-11 center, finished with just five points and three rebounds. Pratt worked hard to net 15 points on five-of-13 shooting, and added nine rebounds. Nicole Lehner chipped in with 13 points, but nine came in the final quarter when the margin was more than 20 points.

"Kalaheo played well, but we weren't mentally prepared," Kaiser coach Lisa Mann said. "The turnovers, I can't describe it."

Kaiser fell behind early and had to junk its 2-3 zone, but came within 20-17 on a foul-line jumper by Sharde Pratt.

Kalaheo closed out the final 5 minutes of the first half with a dominant 15-4 run. Smith scored six points to trigger the run, driving to the basket for two tough buckets. In the final 33 seconds of the half, Canon drained a 3-pointer and stole the ball to feed Shaina Siliga for another bucket.

Kalaheo led 36-21 at intermission. Canon hit another trey early in the third quarter, and Smith hit two mid-range jumpers as the Lady Mustangs opened the second half with a 9-3 run. They led 45-24 with less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter and never looked back.

"After losing to Kahuku, we wanted to come out strong," said Canon, a 5-foot-7 junior.

She made nine of her 12 field-goal attempts, including 3-for-4 from the arc. She also had five steals, including four during the pivotal second quarter.

Smith had a better shooting night, sinking the open shots she missed often at Kahuku.

"I went in the gym and practiced," the 5-10 swingman said.
