Be one with Earth

To get people to start thinking about Earth Day, April 22, the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Outreach program offers "Ecopsychology: Exploring the Human to Nature Connection," running three consecutive weekends, starting Saturday.

The noncredit class will be taught by Dr. Neil Gowensmith, a licensed psychologist who is passionate about exploring people's attitudes and motivations in relation to the environment. Gowensmith has taught ecopsychology on the mainland, in Belize and South Africa.

Ecopsychology refers to our connection to the natural world. But most people act as though we are separate from nature instead of an intrinsic part. Gowensmith is curious about the roots of this split and the rationale for our thoughts and reactions.

The course blends group projects, individual reflection, art and science to explore topics. A good part of class time will be spent outdoors.

The class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday through April 23 at the Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012. The cost is $125. To learn more visit: www.outreach.hawaii.edu. To register, call 956-8400. Pre-registration is a must.

Youths in grades 3 to 12 can participate in fun outdoor activities with peers dealing with the similar experiences.

A pre-camp gathering will take place on May 14 for campers and their families. Cost to attend the two-day camp is $50. Some scholarships are available. Call Christa Otake at 791-8044.
