It’s Borges Five-O,
the show that will
never, ever end

HAPPY 5-0, JIMMY!: Jimmy Borges told the crowd at the Hawai'i International Jazz Festival "Springtime in Honolulu II" concert last weekend that 2005 is his 50th year as a professional entertainer, and he's not ready to retire. "The passion for music never goes away, and if you're lucky you can go on doing it," he says ....

VAHITIAN POWER: The 8th Annual Hawaii Music Awards had been plodding along almost four hours by the time Vaihi performed, but all it took was a bit of Bruddah Sam Longi's "human beat-boxing" to get the dwindling crowd re-energized. Vaihi won in the "Polynesian Album" category ....

A FACE IN THE CROWD: That was Gene De Francis in the role of the loyal sailor who throws blows for his captain in "Phantom Below," the submarine thriller that opened the Hawai'i International Film Festival Spring Showcase last Thursday ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: To Ariana Griffith, who is celebrating today .... also to Fil Slash (Friday), Jay Larrin (Saturday), Sean Na'auao (Sunday), Maestro Samuel Wong (Tuesday), and Tracy Smith (Wednesday) ....

CONGRATULATIONS: To Maile Emily Kau'ilanionapuaehi'ipolokeanuenueokola Francisco, Miss Aloha Hula 2005, and to Sonny Ching, kumu hula of Halau Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu. It's the third year in a row that the woman he picked to represent the halau has won the coveted title ... And kumu hula Robert Cazimero's Halau Na Kamalei placing first in all kane categories and "Overall" honors as well ...

7 + 1 = WHAT?: Cassandra Wormser's ambitious original production of "Pandora and The Seven Deadly Sins" at the UH-Manoa Ernst Lab Theatre last weekend took mind-boggling liberties with the familiar Greek story of the curious woman who released evil into the world. Wormser re-wrote Pandora as a passive observer. The deadly sin of Gluttony was replaced by Regret, and Deceit was added; that makes eight deadly sins. Bright spots in the colorful but slow-moving hour and 45-minute one-act show were Stephanie Kong (Pride) as an arrogant torch singer, William Boynton (Sloth) as a hookah-smoking jazzer, Nicole Tessier (Envy) as a nasty fortune-teller, and Travis S.N. Rose (Anger) as an annoyingly untalented insult comic ...
