Cazimeros, winning

at Moana Surfrider

Congrats to Robert Cazimero and his Men of Halau Na Kamalei, overall title winners in the Merrie Monarch Festival. Some of his dancers will perform when the Brothers Cazimero headline the Sheraton Moana Surfrider's Concert in the Courtyard show at 5:30 to 7 p.m., April 14. Other acts are Ray Swoders and Shawn Ishimoto, and Kaumakaiwa Kanakaole. Jacqueline "Skylark" Rosetti is emcee. Admission is free. There is a one-drink minimum. Bryon Maikaiau, a member of Robert's halau and a Moana Surfrider employee, will dance in the show. Bryon will also be featured in Bluestocking Films' "Na Hula Kane," a documentary on male hula dancers for PBS. Director is Lisette Marie Flanary. Her "American Aloha" docu was the top-rated show in PBS' "Point of View" series in 2003 ... The UH Founders Alumni Association honored Dr. Hubert Everly for his contributions on his 90th birthday March 27 at its fund-raiser at the Ilikai ... Symphony backers Bob and Dee Levy held a small dinner at Le Bistro for drum soloists Kenny Endo and Stuart Chafetz after last Sunday's "Concerto for Taiko and Timpani" concert ...

Ultra-violent 'Sin City' can drive a guy to drink

After watching two hours of bloody shootings, killings, torture, cannibalism and sex in "Sin City" Sunday, I hit the bar at Cheesecake Factory to have a drink with bartenders Joe "Mad Dog" Kelly and Chad Mears. Both wanted to know if I'd give "Sin City" a thumb's up. I had to work well into the wine and think more about it before I upped the thumb -- but not with gusto. Technically, it's way up there, filmed in black and white but with splashes of color for dramatic effect. The gritty narration in the three separate stories is sharp and tight. Plus, it is filled with gorgeous, sexy women such as Jessica Alba -- a good thing -- and the superhero of each story deals out heavyduty pain to bad guys. But he takes tremendous beatings before doing so. Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen are the heroes. The cannibal in "Sin City" is also a pedophile. This dirtbag is so rotten he makes Hannibal the Cannibal in "Silence of the Lambs" look like a piker. And he has a cannibalistic mad dog! Don't say you weren't warned ...
