Jellyfish invasion
closes Hanauma Bay

The city closed Hanauma Bay yesterday after lifeguards reported between 20 and 30 box jellyfish on the beach in the morning.

Jellyfish were also spotted in Waikiki, but there were considerably fewer of them yesterday than there were Sunday, according to the Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division.

Lifeguards treated about 50 swimmers stung by jellyfish Sunday in waters off Waikiki, Ala Moana and Hanauma Bay.

Warning signs were posted at the beaches through the weekend, and were expected to be up through yesterday. Ocean Safety expected the influx of jellyfish to finish by today.
