A Royal Parade anchors the
Merrie Monarch Festival

The Royal Parade in honor of "Merrie Monarch" King David Kalakaua snaked through downtown Hilo late Saturday morning, the centerpiece of the week-long Merrie Monarch Festival, which included the weekend's three-day hula competition. Marching in front of the Hilo High School marching band were Namahana Avilla, left, Tiana Berido, Julia Kihng and Kayina Norris.

Stephanie Goya, left, Dareece Soares and Chanae Esphejo, all 11-year-olds from Pacific Gymnasts in Hilo, did handstands along the parade route. The Merrie Monarch Festival has been held in Hilo since 1963, and features arts and crafts exhibitions as well as the parade and hula contest.
