There's a job fair at WCC on Thursday

Businesses and governmental agencies will be hanging out their shingles at a job fair this Thursday at Windward Community College.

Sponsored by the college's Employment Training Center, the fair will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school's Hale Akoakoa Atrium.

Businesses on hand will include Roberts Hawaii, Macy's, Bank of Hawaii, Wackenhut Corp., Sears Roebuck & Co., Servco Pacific, Altres Staffing, Zippy's and Foodland Supermarkets.

Governmental agencies on hand will include the Honolulu Police Department and the FBI.

For more information, call Terri Hunt at 844-2357 or go to the college's Web site at http://windward.hawaii.edu.

Hawaii Kai center fixing entryway

The Keahole Street entrance and exit at Hawaii Kai Towne Center will be closed intermittently for at least three weeks starting today so the road can be smoothed out.

Drivers are urged to use alternate routes to access and leave the center. Those heading west on Kalanianaole Highway can enter near Outback Steakhouse, while on Keahole Street, there are two access options: the traffic light near Tesoro service station and the entryway near Costco.

Keauhou Beach Resort rebranded

Outrigger Enterprises Inc. is rebranding its 309-room Keauhou Beach Resort on the Big Island as an Outrigger property, following renovations that lifted it out of the Ohana category.

Outrigger Enterprises operates more than 50 properties throughout the Pacific, most as part of its Outrigger Hotels & Resorts division and 12 under its more economically priced Ohana Hotels & Resorts division.

Renovations at the Keauhou hotel involved its restaurants, banquet facilities and public areas. More upgrades are expected to be completed at the property by the end of the year, including improved lighting for outdoor function areas.

Going without rest is dangerous

Is your life a blur, an exhausting mix of work, deadlines, parents, children and only a few hours of sleep most nights?

If so, get some rest -- chances are good you're adding all sorts of risks to your life, according to the April issue of Consumer Reports on Health, a monthly publication from Consumers Union.

Weight gain is high on the list, according to a January study of 900 people by Eastern Virginia Medical School, which found that fatigue can increase your appetite. In another study by the University of Chicago, sleep-deprived people reported greater food cravings.

In other reasons to sleep adequately, the publication noted that sleep-deprivation can lead to deadly accidents and may increase resistance to insulin, which raises the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
