Maryknoll pulls away
to defeat Kamehameha

Coming out flat can be dangerous in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

But Maryknoll pulled together in the second half to escape with a victory in its ILH opener last night.

The third-ranked Spartans never trailed but had to hold on to defeat No. 8 Kamehameha 44-41 at Hawaii Baptist Academy.

The veteran Spartans dominated inside and crashed the boards to score some quick transition baskets.

Maryknoll attacked the basket relentlessly and used a 2-3 zone to stifle Kamehameha.

The Spartans got double-digit performances from three players and needed all of those points. Senior posts Sela Fisilau (13 points, five rebounds) Cheryl Lee (12 points, four rebounds) and sophomore Nicole Fu (12 points, six rebounds) paced the Spartans.

"Kamehameha came out like gangbusters," Spartans coach Bobby Samson said. "They're always well coached. They came out with tremendous energy.

"We came out a little flat. But we're satisfied with the win."

For three quarters, Maryknoll (12-1, 1-0) got all it could handle from the Warriors (5-2, 0-1). The Spartans used an 11-5 run late in the third quarter to get some separation. Fu sparked the Spartans with seven points during that run, including a 3-pointer to push Maryknoll ahead 36-28.

"We could play better," Fu said. "Our defense has to get stronger. We had breakdowns."

The Warriors made one last push and closed to 42-39 with a minute left in the game. Tiana Abbley bombed a trey and Cacey Lum sandwiched two free throws around a Maryknoll timeout. In the frantic final minute, the Warriors had multiple shots at tying the game but couldn't convert.
