HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Aquino beats wind
and Kapolei

Through every possible obstacle, Tony Aquino has learned to breathe and endure.

That knowledge helped yesterday in 30-mph gusts. Aquino struck out 12 and scattered four hits as Mililani blanked Kapolei 11-0 in six innings at the Hurricanes' field.

With distractions from above -- fighter jets, jumbo jets, DC-9s among an assortment of aircraft that hovered every few minutes -- Aquino's ability to concentrate was key. Even the powerful gust blowing out to right field couldn't hinder the senior right-hander.

"The wind helped me. It made my curve and fastball get more movement," he said. The gusts also gave him plenty of air to work with.

"Coach (Dean Sato) brought in a new program about breathing and relaxing, so I just stay focused," said Aquino, who threw his fastball at his normal mid-80-mph range. His curveball was mind-bending, helping Aquino record four strikeouts in a row during the middle innings.

"I'm very impressed with Tony," Sato said. "His composure was great, throwing in these gusts."

Ranked No. 3 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, Mililani improved to 3-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division (12-5 overall).

Kapolei, which has faced some of the West's top teams recently, dropped to 0-4 in league play (6-11 overall).

"We're young, so it's a learning experience," Kapolei coach Tom Ibanez said. "Hopefully, we can feed off this and it'll help us."

Hurricanes starter Jon Santiago had a rough go in the first two innings, throwing 73 pitches. Mililani jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after a double by Chaz Miyashiro and a two-run double by Brandon Oshiro. Dustin Antolin's sacrifice fly brought home Oshiro to cap the first frame.

The Trojans broke the game open with five runs in the second. Kelsey Nakata led off with a triple to center, and Miyashiro stroked another ground-rule double to right-center. Kamaka Crabbe delivered a two-run double. Antolin and Justin Sagami also ripped RBI doubles.

Aquino fed off his team's offensive explosion, throwing just 72 pitches for the win.

"When I get a lead, I feel more comfortable. I just want to keep 'em down. You could feel their momentum go down," he said. "They were quiet."

Jordan Canionero led Kapolei with two hits, including one off a curveball.

"You gotta stick it out and wait for your pitch," he advised. "You can't try to hit it over the fence. He has good speed on the fastball."

The Hurricanes were as focused as can be despite losing ace pitcher Cameron San Gregory for an indefinite time. The senior was assaulted last Sunday night at a theater and underwent surgery yesterday for injuries to his face.

"He's such a nice guy. He led this team by example, and all the kids fed off that," Ibanez said. "He went to the theater to pick up a friend, and some other kids stopped him and demanded his money. That was the last thing he could remember."

The assault suspects were rounded up, Ibanez said, when they were spotted still at the theater a while later by an adult who broke up the assault.

"One of them was waiting around for his mother to finish watching a movie," Ibanez said.

San Gregory pitched for Kapolei as a freshman before playing at Mililani the past two seasons.
