Oh Mann! Kaiser’s Pratt
hurts knee but gives coach
birthday win

Gutsy performances from Kilioe Aliifua and Sharde Pratt helped Kaiser coach Lisa Mann celebrate her birthday the way she wanted -- with a victory.

Aliifua scored a game-high 22 points and Pratt's free throw with 29 seconds left lifted the Cougars to a dramatic 35-34 victory over the Rough Riders last night at Roosevelt.

"We'll take that win," Mann said. "One-point wins are always scary, but Roosevelt is a scrappy team. Give them credit."

It was the third straight victory for the Cougars, but it didn't come without a little March madness, high school girls style.

Aliifua scored 13 of Kaiser's 15 points in the third quarter, but it was the Cougars' defense, which limited Roosevelt to just 1-for-10 shooting with six turnovers in the period, that helped turn a one-point halftime lead into what appeared to be a commanding 31-22 advantage.

However, a 9-1 Roosevelt run to start the final quarter opened the door for Pratt's late-game heroics.

With the score tied at 34, the Cougars let the clock wind down to nearly 30 seconds before Pratt was undercut by Roosevelt freshman Kaitlynn Simmonds on a layup attempt. While Simmonds fouled out on the play, the hard fall aggravated a left knee injury Pratt suffered earlier in the season. She was barely able to walk after the game. But, even with a raucous home crowd doing all they could to distract her, Pratt nailed the second of her two free throws for the game's final point.

"I just wanted to make it to make them mad," Pratt said of the Roosevelt fan section behind the basket taunting each of her free throws.

The Rough Riders got one last chance to steal the victory, but Noelle Kawelo's shot went long and Pratt hauled in the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

"Sharde was awesome at the end," Mann said. "Her knee was hurting her and everything, but she pulled it out."

Pratt finished with six points and six rebounds as the Cougars used a 25-14 rebounding edge to help improve to 3-1 in the East.

"We knew (Aliifua) gave us an advantage inside, so we worked the high-low to also help get them in foul trouble," Mann said. "It worked, but we didn't take advantage of it like we should have, especially in the first half."

The 35 points scored by the Cougars were a regular-season low.

"We worked hard, but they put a lot of pressure on us," Aliifua said. "Coach tells us to turn it on as soon as we step on the court and even though we started a little late today, we worked through it."

Chelsie Kadota led the Rough Riders with 12 points, but Roosevelt was just 8-for-30 from the field. The Rough Riders stayed in the game by getting 12 steals and forcing 17 turnovers.

"We weren't playing smart and didn't get back on defense fast enough," Pratt said. "But we're starting to work as a team now and each win has given us more confidence."

Pratt had to be helped out of the gym after the game and her status for Kaiser's next game is uncertain.
