There was music in the air and in the conversation as well in the Bistro's private dining room Easter Sunday. Symphony Board Chair Carolyn Berry threw a dinner party and Symphony Executive Director Stephen Bloom and his predecessor, Michael Tiknis, were among the guests. Michael was with his wife, Sharon, and their 6-foot-3, 15-year-old son, Aaron. "We came to see (our calabash) 'Mom,' Carolyn," Michael said, "one of our favorite people." Michael is managing director of Chicago's Harris Theater for Music and Dance ... Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves headlines the Honolulu Symphony Pops Concert April 9 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Conductor Matt Catingub also has drummer Noel Okimoto on the bill ...

Pianist Renate Tsuyako Rohlfing received praise in the New York Times for her recent performance with the New-Music Ensemble at the Manhattan School of Music. She is a junior and a scholarship student at the school. Renate is the daughter of attorney Frederick "Fritz" Rohlfing III and his wife, Deon, and is the granddaughter of former state Sen. Fred Rohlfing. She attended Roosevelt and Punahou and left for the Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Department in 2001 where her talent has attracted attention. That year she won the New Orleans Piano Institute Concerto Competition and performed with the New Orleans Çivic Symphony. In 2002, Renate was one of the outstanding young pianists chosen to compete in the inaugural New York Piano Competition ...

Daughter has Al Wongs planning trip to India

Trudy Schandler-Wong sends word that daughter, Shaaroni, graduates from Boston U. May 22, and then will go to India to work as a teacher for a year. That has Trudy and husband, Al, already planning an India trip. But for now, Trudy is chairing the Temple Emanu-el Honors Our Legal Community fund-raiser April 10 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. Being honored are Mark Bennett, Margery Bronster, Robert Marks, Evelyn Lance, Sherry Broder, Richard Turbin, Aviam Soifer and the late Bernard Levinson. Call 595-7521 for tickets priced at $180 ... "Cabaret" has been extended yet again at Manoa Valley Theatre. The production will now run through April 24 ...
