HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

No. 4 Kalaheo,
No. 5 Kahuku
ready to collide

They may be silent, but the leaders in the Star-Bulletin Girls Basketball Top 10 aren't exactly snoozing.

Three of the top six were idle last week, but remained locked in place. Punahou (9-1), which opens its regular season Friday against Mid-Pacific, remained No. 1 with all 13 of the panel's first-place votes.

Konawaena got a bye through the week when rain in Kohala rendered the Cowgirls' gym unplayable. The Wildcats (8-1) are a distinguished No. 2 again.

Maryknoll, Kalaheo, Kahuku and Iolani follow. Maryknoll stayed busy by downing Word of Life as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season nears. The Spartans open against Kamehameha on Saturday.

The only losses thus far for Konawaena and Maryknoll (11-1) have been against Punahou.

Fourth-ranked Kalaheo and No. 5 Kahuku are rolling along with 4-0 starts in Oahu Interscholastic Association East action. The two teams square off Saturday at Kahuku.

Iolani stayed put at No. 6, while Honokaa leap-frogged over Kamehameha into the seventh spot. Honokaa defeated Kamehameha-Hawaii 55-45 in its Big Island opener.

Kaiser returned to the Top 10 after two resounding victories in OIA East play, including a surprisingly lopsided win over pesky Farrington. The ninth-ranked Lady Cougars are led by the power trio of Kilioe Aliifua, Sharde Pratt and Nicole Lehner.

Hilo rounds out the poll at No. 10.
