Satele is discus champion at Stanford meet

Brashton Satele, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound senior from Word of Life Academy, won the high school discus event at the Stanford Invitational track meet Saturday with a toss of 193 feet, 3 inches.

The throw came one week after Satele had a 181-foot toss in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu meet.

In addition, Kamehameha's Keani Santos placed fifth in the girls discus event with a toss of 126 feet.

Warriors volleyball banquet on April 17

The University of Hawaii volleyball team is holding its annual banquet April 17 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.

The banquet begins with no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m., with a buffet dinner and program at 6:30. The band NYK, which features Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Ashley Watanabe, is providing the entertainment.

Tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for ages 2-12 when postmarked by April 7. Walk-up registration on the day of the event is $60. For more information, call 630-9304 or 623-6752 during the evenings.

Relay for Life at Cooke Field

The Hawaii Student Athlete Advisory Committee will host the 12-hour American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Cooke Field on April 8 at 7 p.m.

The event includes a traditional candle-lighting ceremony to honor those who have been touched by cancer as well as autograph signings by UH athletes and entertainment. Funds raised go toward cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.

Workshop includes coaching lecture

Positive Coaching Alliance founder Jim Thompson will deliver a keynote speech on "Life Lessons from the Playing Field" during a workshop on character and values education April 8 at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

The workshop is entitled "Facilitating Extraordinary Accomplishments in Hawaii's Youth."

The luncheon speaker will be former University of Hawaii associate athletic director Rockne Freitas, the chancellor at Hawaii Community College. For information and registration forms, e-mail PCABigIsland@verizon.net.

Webster University's Aiona is all-conference pick

Webster University senior and Honokaa graduate Kaniela Aiona was selected to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference second team in men's basketball.

A 6-foot-6 center for the league champion Gorloks, Aiona led the team in rebounds with 153 while averaging 13.4 points per game.
