HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Mustangs make do without
ill point guard

Their Canon was sidelined, but the Lady Mustangs of Kalaheo found another way to win a key game.

Kalaheo used a smothering 2-3 zone against a cold-shooting Roosevelt squad en route to a 55-27 win on a sultry night at the Lady Mustangs gym.

Taylor Smith scored 11 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out four assists as Kalaheo improved to 3-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East play. Kalaheo (10-3 overall), ranked No. 4 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, played with efficiency much of the night despite the absence of point guard Shanadee Canon, who has the flu.

Roosevelt, still playing without two key starters, dropped to 1-1 in league play (8-6 overall). Shannon Miyashiro scored nine points and corralled seven boards to lead the Rough Riders, who shot just 23 percent from the field (10 of 44). They made four of 20 3-point attempts (20 percent).

With Canon sidelined, Kalaheo looked to Shaina Siliga for more production. The senior guard came through with a team-high 13 points on 6-for-9 accuracy from the floor.

"Shaina had a slow start, but she had a tremendous second half, maybe the best I've seen from her," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "Sometimes, she settles for 3-pointers, but tonight she got to the basket. She made beautiful passes and exerted herself more."

Siliga also grabbed eight rebounds.

"Coach always talks about the three of us who do most of the scoring," Siliga said. "I'm a co-captain and a senior, so I figured now was the time to step up."

Junior center Kathleen Hicks also came up big, scoring 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting in the paint.

Roosevelt, coming off a win over McKinley on Saturday, hung tough on the road until the midway point of the third quarter. The Rough Riders pulled within 24-18 on a jumper by Kaitlynn Simmonds and a layup by Miyashiro.

Kalaheo then went on a 12-0 run as Smith sank a free throw and found Siliga open for a 16-foot jumper and a layup. After Hicks scored under the basket twice, Kalaheo led 36-18 as the quarter came to an end.

"We had a quickness disadvantage, and they didn't shoot the ball well," Furtado said of his team's zone. The tactic also helped keep Siliga and Smith out of foul trouble most of the night. "If Roosevelt had made some shots early, we would've had to adjust."

Roosevelt got no closer than 16 the rest of the way. The Rough Riders didn't get to the free-throw line until the third quarter, and that was only to shoot two free throws after a technical foul was assessed to Furtado at the end of the first half. Roosevelt finished with 21 turnovers and was outrebounded 31-22.

Kalaheo shot 46 percent from the field (18 of 39) and just 52 percent from the line (16 of 31), including 8-for-17 in the final quarter as Furtado emptied his bench. The Lady Mustangs committed 16 turnovers against Roosevelt's man-to-man defense.

"Roosevelt's still a tough team, with or without the players who are hurt," Siliga said. "We're not in a position to take anyone lightly."

Roosevelt hopes to get starters Tati Beasley (ankle) and Nicole Yoshimoto (knee) back next week.
