RAINBOW BASEBALL

’Bows drop to .500
with road loss

The game included a two-out
pop-up lost in the lights for
three Pacific runs

The Hawaii Rainbows had to wait a day because of rain to play a nonconference game against Pacific at Stockton, Calif., yesterday. The first road game of the season turned out to be a sour experience.

The Tigers broke open a pitchers' duel with a four-run sixth inning en route to a 7-2 triumph that ended a seven-game losing streak. The first five UOP runs were unearned.

UH junior right-hander Colby Summer and UOP freshman right-hander Jason Harr matched pitches for five innings at Billy Hebert Field. The score was 1-1 with each team scoring an unearned run.

After the Rainbows (13-13) were unable to take advantage of runners at first and second with one out in the fourth and first and third with one out in the fifth, Pacific did not waste such a chance in the sixth.

With one out, Brandon Gottier reached on a fielding error by UH second baseman Isaac Omura and took second on Jerin Harper's single up the middle. The runners advanced on a grounder to first.

The UH coaches intentionally walked Justin Baum, who had doubled in the first UOP run, loading the bases. Brett Manning, hitting .091, sent a high fly to shallow center on a 3-1 pitch that fell to the soggy grass and cleared the bases.

"It was an out, inning over, a high fly that went above the lights and they are horrible here," said Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso.

"Joe (Spiers) goes out and loses the ball. Matt (Inouye) comes in and loses the ball. It's probably Matt's ball, but when things are going the way they are right now, that is the kind of play you see."

"You have to find a way to make plays, find a way to score more than two runs. We are going to right this and play like we did two weekends ago. The kids can not lose the faith."

Will Brindza followed with a double over Jeff Piaskowski's head in left to score Manning for a 5-1 UOP lead.

Piaskowski started the seventh with his first homer of the season, a drive over the left-field wall the cut the UH deficit to 5-2, but that was all the offense the 'Bows could generate.

The Tigers (11-14) scored twice more in the bottom of the inning, helped by two of the four errors committed by UH.

Summer was the victim of the non support. He allowed eight hits, walked two and fanned five and hit a batter.

"Colby threw better than he has the last couple of starts. We didn't make the plays behind him which we normally do," said Trapasso.

Two Pacific errors led to the 'Bows run in the third inning.

Piaskowski was safe a first on a throwing error by UOP shortstop Dale Hall. Piaskowski took second on Schafer Magana's sacrifice bunt. On Joe Spiers' infield single up the third-base line, Piaskowski went to third, then came home when the throw from third baseman Baum got by the first baseman.

The Tigers tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth when on Gottier leadoff with a single to left, He continued to second when Piaskowski misplayed the ball. Gottier took third on a wild pitch and scored on Baum's two-out double to left.

The Rainbows travel to Fresno, Calif., today and open a three-game Western Athletic Conference series against Fresno State tomorrow night. Steven Wright will start for UH.

The Bulldogs are off to another slow start, but the past couple of years have turned their fortunes around when conference play started,

"We always seem to right their (the Bulldogs) ship. Of course, in the past we were playing well. This year is different because we aren't playing well. Maybe we will right our own ship," said Trapasso.
