Nishikida earns PacWest softball honor

Hawaii Pacific freshman outfielder Kellie Nishikida was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week in softball after helping the Sea Warriors to a 5-1 record last week.

Nishikida was 8-for-17 with two triples and eight RBIs. She also scored six runs.

Vulcans in 13th place at Oregon golf tourney

The Hawaii-Hilo men's golf team was in 13th place going into today's final round of the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.

The Vulcans carded a team 596, 24 strokes behind leader Georgia Tech in the 16-team tournament. The top Hilo golfer after two rounds is Troy Higashiyama, whose 147 has him in a tie for 33rd.

Hawaii softball team takes 2 to end homestand

In her first pitching performance of the year, freshman Kate Robinson tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout as Hawaii topped Tokyo 2-0 on Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in the finale of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.

Hawaii finished 5-1 in the seven-team event, including an 8-3 victory earlier Sunday over San Diego. Paula Blanning earned the win in relief, holding the Toreros to two hits in the final 4 2/3 innings.

The Wahine (18-14) are at the Stanford Invitational this week. They return home to host Fresno State for three games April 1-2.

Hawaii Pacific easily sweeps doubleheader

Hawaii Pacific batters combined for 28 hits to roll past Alderson-Broaddus 11-1 and 18-9 in a nonconference baseball doubleheader Sunday at Aloha Stadium.

Leading the Sea Warriors in the opener were Brandon Sato, who homered, and Danny Lee and Tyler Jefferson, who both got two hits. In the nightcap, Greg Benoit homered and drove in three runs for HPU.

The Sea Warriors (16-8) and Battlers (1-17) meet again in a doubleheader today starting at 4 p.m. and a single game at noon tomorrow at Aloha Stadium.

Rainbow Wahine tennis team falls to Cornell

Hawaii senior Lauren Fitzgerald, ranked 84th in singles, won both her singles and doubles matches, but it wasn't enough as the Wahine lost to Cornell 6-1 at the UH Tennis Complex yesterday.

Fitzgerald rallied to defeat Akane Kokubo 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, then teamed with Paige Mainor for an 8-4 win over Kokubo and Mollie Edinson. However, the Big Red won the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches to win the doubles point.

Hawaii (5-10) hosts Xavier today and Loyola Marymount tomorrow at the UH courts. Both matches start at 10 a.m.

Hawaii track team sets 4 school records

The Hawaii women's track and field team set three school relay records in winning the events at last week's Cal State Northridge Invitational.

The Rainbow Wahine won the distance medley, the 4x1,600 and 1,600 sprint relay races. Sophomore Patricia Gauthier also set a UH record in the pole vault (3.70 meters).

Also last week, sophomores Dana Buchanan and Kelly Young won their events at the Occidental College Distance Carnival in Los Angeles.

Young won the 800 in 2 minutes, 9.79 seconds to earn an automatic spot in the NCAA Regionals. Buchanan won the 1,500 in 4:35.83, beating out teammate Heather Scott (4:40.93).

UH offers water polo promotion

Fans attending the University of Hawaii's water polo match against Pacific on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. will receive a discount coupon for Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park.

Admission to the match is free, and fans will have promotional opportunities to win free tickets to the water park.
