DeMello promoted at KITV

Rob DeMello has been promoted to weekend sports anchor at KITV, replacing Dan Meisenzahl who will be moving to the morning show as a reporter.

DeMello, who has been working as a producer and reporter for the past two years at the news station, will begin his anchoring duties April 3rd.

Coogan shuts down Loyola

Melissa Coogan picked up her 10th win of the season, giving up just one run in going the distance as Hawaii defeated LMU 2-1 yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Both of Hawaii's runs came on a two-run double by Kaulana Gould in the sixth inning. The Wahine are now 17-14 for the season.

Shutout in opener: Miami's Courtney Salmon shut down the Wahine, giving up just four hits in pitching a shutout as Miami defeated Hawaii 5-0.

Leadoff hitter Tracie Uchima was 3-for-3 for the Wahine, but was stranded on base every time as Hawaii's 2-6 hitters were a combined 1-for-17.

Bears too much for Vulcans

The UH-Hilo baseball team lost a doubleheader to California yesterday, dropping the Vulcans to 1-30 for the season.

John Matson gave up just two runs, but was the victim of no run support as the Vulcans managed just five hits in losing the opener 2-1. Michael Higa was the only Vulcan with two hits.

Trailing 10-0 in the second game, the Vulcans used a 10-run sixth inning to tie the game, but eventually lost 13-10.

HPU sweeps: The Sea Warriors improved to 14-8 after sweeping Alderson Broaddus 8-7 and 1-0 yesterday at Aloha Stadium.

Cruz Hatanaka picked up the win in relief in game one, giving up just two hits while striking out five in four innings of work.

The second game featured a dominating performance from starter Josh Guerra, who improved to 3-1 with the shutout, tossing a one-hitter while striking out six. The Sea Warriors won both games in their final at-bat.

Two shutouts for UH-Hilo

Leo Sing Chow and Sarah Steele each threw shutouts as the UH-Hilo softball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Minnesota Morris yesterday in Hilo.

The Vulcans took the first game 5-0 behind Sing Chow's dominant performance, striking out seven while walking none. She did not allow a hit until the sixth inning.

Not to be outdone, Steele led the Vulcans to a 8-0 win in the second game, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Sing Chow added a home run in the game.

BYU-Hawaii sweeps Chaminade: Amanda Nino hit a grand slam in game one and Katie Pagen picked up the win in game two as the Seasiders swept Chaminade by identical 7-5 scores yesterday.

Echo Allred pitched a complete game in the opener to get the win as the Seasiders improved to 10-14 overall, 2-4 in PacWest play. Up next for BYU-Hawaii is Western New Mexico in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. in Laie.

Miyashiro headlines QB Club

University of Hawaii golf coach Ronn Miyashiro, former Rainbows basketball player Al Davis and retired Star Bulletin sportswriter Jim Becker will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.

The public is invited to the luncheon which begins at 11:30 a.m. The program starts at noon.

BYU-Hawaii finishes last

The BYU-Hawaii men's golf team, in its first year of existence, finished last in this weekend's Kauai Collegiate Cup in Princeville.

Freshmen Mark Neider shot a final-round 71 to become the first Seasider to finish a round under par. Neider finished 13-over to lead the team.
