Kickers become
spectators

N ot all of Hawaii's players on mainland college rosters had the chance to work up a sweat against an opponent last fall. They did not play for various reasons but hope for better results this fall.

Three sophomore goalkeepers spent their time watching matches from the bench.

David Semenza (Punahou) was a backup for the 8-7-2 Brown Bears, who used second-team, All-Ivy League senior Chris Gomez in every match.

Hunter Gradie, a redshirt freshman from Mid-Pacific, did not play for the Delaware Blue Hens, who finished 4-13-1.

Vito Higgins redshirted at Gonzaga. The Academy of the Pacific graduate suffered a medial collateral ligament injury the first day of spring ball.

Several other players from Hawaii did not play.

Freshman Dane McCleary redshirted for the San Diego Toreros. The defender graduated from Iolani.

Lindsey Rothbaum put her soccer career on hold at California Lutheran. The midfielder from St. Andrew's Priory is studying in Australia this year.

Caroline Beddow (Mid-Pacific), a freshman goalkeeper for Cal Lutheran a year ago, decided to play basketball for the Regals this year.

Joni Yoon transferred to New Mexico Highlands from Yuba Community College. Unfortunately, the sophomore midfielder from Pearl City had knee surgery and redshirted.

Kim Unten (Pearl City) decided not to return to NMHU for her sophomore season.

"It was a real heartbreaker because Kim performed so well last year," said Cowboys coach Ron Blue.

Randi Kikuchi suffered an ACL injury in July and is redshirting for the San Francisco Dons this year. The defender is a graduate of Seabury Hall. She has one more year of eligibility.

Elsewhere, Kenan Knieriem, a junior from Punahou, made four starts in 15 matches for the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen. The midfielder/striker assisted on the first goal in a 2-2 tie vs. Maryland-Baltimore County.

Daniel Park shot five times but did not score in 19 matches for the Pacific Boxers. The junior midfielder from Pearl City started 17 times.

Striker Karley Peterson had one assist in 17 matches for the Pacific women's team. The junior, a Leilehua graduate, unloaded 10 shots in goal but had no luck finding the net.

Kristin Chung, a Hawaii Baptist graduate who played for Pac-Five, came off the bench for action in 15 matches for the 9-6-2 Point Loma Nazarene Crusaders, an NAIA school in San Diego. The midfielder/striker did not score on four shots during her freshman season.

Max Bowman saw plenty of playing time as a freshman for the 15-3-3 Redlands Bulldogs, who were co-champions of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Honokaa grad started 14 of the 18 games he played, scored once and had one assist for the NCAA Division III team.

"Max had a good year for us," said coach Rob Becerra.

Will Cooper enrolled at North Idaho College for the spring semester. The Cardinals, a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Northeast Division, were 10-5-3 last year.

Cooper, a goalkeeper and Kalaheo graduate, spent the fall semester working out with the Honolulu Bulls S.C.
