Hongwanji bazaar offers local treats

It's in the middle of Honolulu, but the annual Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin spring bazaar has the flavor of a rural fair where homemade foods are the lure.

On sale at the March 27 "A Taste of Hongwanji" will be fruit preserves, pickled vegetables, chirashi sushi, Okinawan turnip soup and pastries that won in the temple's first "bake-off" contest, as well as an array of plate lunches.

The bazaar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. also will feature plants and produce, a thrift shop of used items and a children's corner with games and craft lessons by Temari instructors.

For information on parking and courtesy delivery service, call 536-7044.

Jews in isle law will be honored

Temple Emanu-El will honor notable Jewish members of the legal community at an April 10 benefit banquet at the Hawaii Prince Hotel's Mauna Kea Ballroom.

State Attorney General Mark Bennett and two who previously held that position, Margery Bronster and Robert Marks, will be recognized for their contributions to the state. Other honorees will be retired Family Court Judge Evelyn Lance; Richard Turbin, president of the Hawaii State Bar Association; Sherry Broder, past president of the association; Dean Aviam Soifer of the William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawaii; and the late Hawaii Supreme Court Justice Bernard Levinson.

Tickets for the dinner are $180 per person, with $100 tax-deductible. Tables for 10 can also be reserved for $1,800 or $3,600. Call Michelle Robinson, 595-7521.
