UH diver Huang wins NCAA national title

Hawaii diver QiongJie Huang won the 1-meter springboard national championship last night on the opening day of the 2005 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Purdue.

The junior from Wen Zhou, Republic of China, edged two-time national champion Blythe Hartley of Southern California 327-324.9.

It was Huang's fourth All-American honor in two years. She is Hawaii's first swimming and diving national champion since Jeanne Childs won two events in 1983.

Three-time defending champion Auburn trailed Georgia by 74 points in the team standings heading into today's action.

Uchima leads Rainbow Wahine to softball win

Tracie Uchima went 3-for-3 and scored a run to help the Hawaii softball team beat Winthrop 3-2 last night at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Melissa Coogan (9-6) gave up earned runs in each of the first two innings before shutting down the Eagles. Tyleen Tausaga had the only other hit for the Rainbow Wahine, who did not have an RBI because of two Winthrop errors.

Hawaii plays Eastern Illinois tonight at 7 p.m.

UH-Hilo's Law district coach of the year

Hawaii-Hilo basketball coach Jeff Law was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches West District Coach of the Year yesterday.

Law led the Vulcans to a Pacific West Conference championship and a 25-4 overall record, with the school's second-highest winning percentage (.862).

Law was also named PacWest coach of the year this season as Hawaii-Hilo played in NCAA Division II postseason play. He earned his 100th career win Jan. 4.

Rainbow Wahine beat Arizona State

Beth Novick and Iefke Van Belkum had hat tricks and Hawaii beat Arizona State 11-6 yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match.

Novick scored the first goal of the day just 21 seconds into the match.

Tracy Andersen, Danielle Mulford, Malia Tarayao Anna Sieprath and Colleen Schiman scored for UH. Hawaii goalie Meike De Nooy had nine saves.

The Rainbow Wahine are 8-6, 3-2 in the MPSF.

Seasiders sweep Minnesota-Morris

Brigham Young-Hawaii swept a softball doubleheader with Minnesota-Morris yesterday, 8-0 and 2-1.

Brooke Hilton pitched a one-hitter in the opener. The game was called in the top of the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

In the second game, Stephanie Pane'e and Amanda Nino had RBIs as the Seasiders scored both runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead.
