Building scholarships offered to Hawaiians

The Construction Training Center of the Pacific is offering scholarships for native Hawaiians to train in the construction industry.

Through a partnership with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the center is offering the Project Aloha Scholarship Program to provide educational and apprenticeship opportunities.

The eligibility requirements follow OHA scholarship guidelines, and scholarships are applied directly to tuition, course materials and/or books only.

The deadline for applications is Monday.

Applications are available on line at info@ConstructionTraining.org or at the Building Industry Association of Hawaii offices at 1727 Dillingham Blvd.; or contact Jo'el Williams at 847-4666, ext. 208.

Workshops to outline grants for Hawaiians

Up to $12.7 million in federal grants will be available this year to fund educational programs for native Hawaiians.

But U.S. Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawaii, said he was concerned not enough organizations in areas populated by the highest concentrations of native Hawaiians are aware of the grants.

Case said earlier this month that at his urging the U.S. Department of Education scheduled six workshops on the Native Hawaiian Education Program, which supports innovative projects that enhance educational services for native Hawaiian children and adults.

Case said in a news release issued by his Washington office that the workshops will be conducted on Oahu, Molokai and the Big Island, with the first scheduled for Monday at Leeward Community College on Oahu.

Subsequent workshops for Maui and Kauai are being planned, he said.
