Hawaii boxers go down in U.S. Championships

Only three Hawaii boxers survived the second round of the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo., yesterday.

Shawn Murphy of Aiea advanced with a win, while Colleen Loo of Mililani received a bye into the next round.

Hawaii's best hopes in the tournament were victims of bad draws, as Brent Rodrigues of Kurtistown, Hawaii, was stopped in the second round by 2004 Golden Gloves, Police Athletic League and Under-19 champion Daniel Jacobs of Brooklyn, N.Y. Rodrigues was leading 4-2 after the first round but got caught with a body shot that ended his night. Tinei Sua of Kahuku and Jenna Oda of Kailua both lost to defending champions.

Christopher Downs of Schofield Barracks no longer trains in Hawaii but advanced when he stopped Valentino Jalamo of Amarillo, Texas, in the first round.

Local fighters Tiana Over of Kihei, Maui, and Armando Ezzo-White of Pearl City lost their bouts yesterday.

Wahine third, Vulcans eighth at Thompson

Hawaii sophomores Dale Gammie and Sara Odelius finished in the top six yesterday to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a third-place finish at the nine-team Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational women's golf tournament.

Gammie finished fourth at 240 and Odelius tied for sixth at 246 to lead Hawaii to a 996 at the windy Kaneohe Klipper Course. Washington State seniors Kim Welch (235) and Jey Lee Longbottom (236) finished 1-2 to help the Cougars to the team title at 976.

Gammie had a one-stroke lead going into yesterday's final round but shot a 10-over 82 to lose out on medalist honors.

Hawaii-Hilo finished eighth in the event. Leading the Vulcans was Breena Kadekaru, who tied for 23rd at 259.

Making history for Brigham Young-Hawaii was Krista Schneiber, who finished 48th at 287. She competed as an individual and was the first female golfer to represent BYUH.

Seasiders split in softball

The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team split its doubleheader with Wisconsin-Stout yesterday, topping the Blue Devils 7-4 in the opener before falling 7-5 in the 13-inning second game.
