‘Lost’ star Matthew Fox
gets an 8-page isle spread in GQ

ABC's "Lost" star Matthew Fox is featured in an eight-page fashion spread entitled "A Cooler Khaki" in this month's GQ magazine, the one with Russell Crowe on the cover. Fox is pictured at scenic Oahu spots, wearing khaki, of course. A full-page shot of the coastline near the Lanai Lookout with Fox standing on Kalanianaole is impressive ... Congratulations to Academy of Arts Deputy Director Carol Fox who is taking a position as director of strategic planning and partnerships at the East West Center. Carol will leave the academy for her new post on June 1...

Thanks to people who offered congratulations after reading Saturday's column about me marking my 38th year with the Star-Bulletin on Sunday. I spent the day pigging out by myself. It was Cheesecake Factory for lunch where I whacked my favorite, meatloaf with delicious gravy. For dinner it was On Jin's Cafe and a tender lobster tail with sherry sauce. At the crowded Factory I ate at the bar. Besides two TV screens, the entertainment includes the lively banter of bartenders Chad Mears and his colleague, whom he calls "Mad Dog." I ran into old friends at On Jin's, which was also packed. Jane Campbell, who "retired" as managing director of the Hawaii Theatre for Youth after an association of 42 years, was dining with friends before catching a movie. "I still hang around HTY and do stuff that's needed," Jane said. Attorney Tom Mui, my fellow staffer on the UH newspaper Ka Leo in the early 1950s, was having dinner with his wife, Lois, and his sister, Fan Mooklan. "It's a long way from Ka Leo," said Tom, about my 38 years with the Bulletin. Right! On Jin Kim was happy when I stopped taking notes and gave up my table to waiting guests ...

Corky's work shows up in unusual places

ONWARD: Star-Bulletin Editorial Cartoonist Corky Trinidad, recently inducted into the Society of Professional Journalists Hawaii Chapter Hall of Fame, was asked to speak at One Kalakaua last week. Corky talked about his career and did drawings. Resident Alice Clay, a Realtor and former professional hula dancer, displayed a large framed Corky drawing of her dancing hula. A friend of Alice's had contracted Corky to do the artwork. Another resident, former Honolulu magazine editor David Eyre, brought a framed Corky cartoon to display ...
