Broncos buck Vulcans from regional

Guard Jonathan Boyd scored a career-high 28 points to lead Cal Poly Pomona to a 73-62 victory over UH-Hilo in yesterday's second round of the NCAA Division II basketball tournament at Bellingham, Wash.

Boyd came into the contest averaging 7.7 ppg but hit six 3-pointers and was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line against the Vulcans. Pomona is the No. 3 seed in the region, Hilo is No. 2.

Alex Cabagnot led the Vulcans with 18 points but PacWest player of the year Skip Esene was held to only 10 points and three rebounds. Esene, a senior, came into the game averaging 20.9 points.

Hilo was tagged with two technical fouls and went to the line 15 times to Pomona's 33. The Vulcans finish the season 25-4.

Wang finishes second in platform

University of Hawaii diver Rui Wang placed second in the women's platform on the final day of the NCAA Zone E Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Wang finished with 431.25 points, while Arizona State's Trisha Tumlinson won with 448.45. Rainbow Wahine QiongJie Huang was 15th with 325.95 and Miranda Maas was 19th with 181.15.

Both Huang and Wang have qualified for next week's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.

Rain washes away baseball, softball

Rain washed out baseball and softball games at the University of Hawaii and Hawaii-Hilo.

The final day of the Spring Fling Tournament was rained out at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Notre Dame was named the tournament champion after finishing 4-0 in round-robin play. Hawaii and Campbell were second with 2-2 records. Nevada and Virginia finished 1-3.

On Friday night, the Rainbow Wahine defeated Nevada 8-4 and fell to Virginia 4-1. Tyleen Tausaga hit a home run against Nevada while Kaulana Gould homered against Virginia. Hawaii fell to 13-11 for the season.

At Hilo, the Vulcans baseball game vs. Meijo University and softball match against BYU-Hawaii were canceled.

Hilo defeated BYUH 3-2 and 4-1 in a nonconference doubleheader on Friday.

In the first game, Charity Senas drove home Laua Kimborowicz for the game-winner in the eighth inning. In the second game, Sarah Steele gave up only one hit while Natalie Fujimoto hit a three-run homer in the win.

UHH improved to 14-2 while BYUH dropped to 4-12.

Local boxers off to nationals

Twelve boxers will represent Hawaii at the U.S. Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The men's contingent consists of Amadeo Ezzo-White Jr. (119 pounds), Isaac Arasato (132), Jeffrey Pelen Jr. (141), Shawn Murphy (152), Brent Rodrigues (152), Filipo Toelau (178), Ryan Bolen (201) and Tinei Su'a (201-plus).

The women's contingent consists of Colleen Loo (101), Tiana Over (145), Jenna-Lyn Oda (154) and Chanelle Valdez. This is the first year that the men's and women's nationals will be combined.

The tournament starts today and ends on March 20. The top four finishers qualify for the U.S. National Elite Team.

Quarterback Club features runners

Two marathon runners will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Mollie Chang, a 2004 Boston Marathon age group winner will speak, along with Kit Smith, another marathon runner and organizer of the Patti Smith Fun Run.

Stephen Tsai of the Honolulu Advertiser will be there as well.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel with the program starting at noon.
