OUR PICKS THIS WEEKEND

Nadine sez ...

Short attention span eater! Maui Mike's -- really two people, Mike Royce and Jairus Cannon, called "Maui" because he's from Haiku -- just set up shop in Wahiawa, offering fire-roasted chicken off a rotisserie specially imported from France. An additional novelty is having the fresh (no steroids, no hormones, no additives) chicken -- not parts -- accompanied by dipping sauces of sweet honey mustard, the Tabasco-like "hot lava," sweet-and-sour or barbecue sauce. Pick one. Extra sauce costs 25 or 50 (small/large) cents.

A quarter-chicken with fries or rice, a soft drink and one dipping sauce runs $4.59. A small chicken feast of a whole chicken, two orders of rice or fries and two large dipping sauces runs $13.35.

If the fledgling franchise works out, Maui Mike's could be springing up all over the place.

Place: 96 S. Kamehameha Highway and Olive Street

Even when there's no south shore surf, the Diamond Head Surfers' Garden -- a quarter mile kokohead of the Lighthouse -- is a great place to watch whales and passing ships, and talk story with "chief landscapers" Shoyu Kawamoto and Gilbert Lum. The rock wall is the bleacher for visitors and also where the "buffet" is held: Food donations by passersby, friends and locals. Pick up a box of malasadas and Shoyu will love you forever. Lum likely will toss you one of the tasty seedless tangerines from his Manoa garden.

Oh, and tell them Tim sent you.

I grew up in a family of tennis fanatics but I prefer volleyball -- it must be recessive. This weekend I'll drag along an unsuspecting friend or family member to catch a UH men's volleyball game. Usually, I go to watch the UH team play at least once against all the visiting teams, but I've only seen two games this season! Bad fan!

Looking for a film that will take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride? The Bollywood film "Kal Ho Naa Ho" that played at the HIFF Festival a few years ago did just that, and I can't wait to see if "Bride & Prejudice" -- though it only received a two-star rating (see Page 22) -- will do the same.
