Rainbow Wahine finish 11th at SJSU

Hawaii's women's golf team moved up a spot to finish in 11th place yesterday at the 15-team San Jose State Spartan Invitational.

Dale Gammie's third top-ten finish of the season was the result of a 75-73-70--915 score, good for a tie for ninth place. Hawaii's Sara Odelius made it two Hawaii golfers in the top 20 by finishing in a tie for 12th, one stroke back.

Local golfers in the field included San Francisco's Joan Shimozaki, who tied for 26th, and New Mexico State's Lehua Wise, who cracked the top 50 in a tie for 45th.

Defending national champion UCLA took the team title. California's Sofie Anderson shot 7 under to win the individual championship.

UH AD named to blacks in sports power list

Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier was named yesterday as one of the 50 most powerful blacks in sports by Black Enterprise magazine in its March cover story.

Frazier was one of eight in the "collegiate decision makers" category, which included seven athletic directors and the chief executive officer of the Orange Bowl Committee.

The magazine consulted with professional and collegiate sports organizations, industry insiders and experts to compile its list. The issue is available on newsstands now, a release said.

By placing in the top three, Takata earned elite level classification points.

Coogan's 75th shutout a 1-0 win

Hawaii's Melissa Coogan pitched the 75th shutout and 27th complete game of her Rainbow Wahine softball career Tuesday as UH beat Virginia 1-0.

Denise Dahlberg's RBI double scored Tara Halbert in the fourth inning for the game's only score.

The second half of the night's doubleheader -- in which Hawaii hit three home runs and was ahead 7-1 -- was rained out and will not be rescheduled.

BYUH's Chrisman, UHH's Esene all-region

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Jake Chrisman repeated as a first-team selection, the only one to do so on the 2005 Daktronics West Regional men's basketball all-star team.

The senior forward was joined on the team by Hawaii-Hilo senior Osadonor Esene. Both players are now eligible for the Daktronics All-America team.

The Seasiders and Vulcans have moved on to postseason play and will take the court tomorrow night in the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament.
