Bottle collection sites
benefit nonprofit group

A Windward Oahu nonprofit environmental group is offering people who want to recycle 100 or fewer bottles and cans an additional place to drop off the empties -- if they are willing to donate any 5-cent deposit refunds to the group.

On alternating weekends in Kaneohe and Kailua, the Windward Ahupuaa Alliance will accept both labeled beverage containers, which qualify for the 5-cent refund at state redemption centers, and unlabeled ones, which don't qualify for a refund.

The group is offering this "Recycling for Change" service both as a fund-raiser for its activities and a public service to recycle beverage containers that won't generate refunds, said Shannon Wood, the alliance president.

Proceeds will be used to fund ongoing restoration and educational projects about illegal dumping.

A white Volkswagen Bug will mark the collection point. For more information, call Wood at 247-6366 or 223-5535.

Locations and times for drop-off are:

» March 13: Noon-1 p.m., Triangle Site opposite Model Airplane Field on Kapaa Quarry Road, Kailua.
» March 20: Noon-1 p.m., Windward Community College, Lower Parking Lot, Kaneohe.
» March 26: 1-2 p.m., Triangle Site opposite Model Airplane Field, Kapaa Quarry Road, Kailua.
