Vitale gets shot at Suda

Local mixed martial artist Falaniko Vitale will face Japan's Masanori Suda in the main event of SuperBrawl 39 at the Stan Sheriff Center April 9.

Vitale, who played football at Waipahu and Hawaii, has only lost once since 2001 and will be fighting for Suda's title. Suda won the title in 2003 from local favorite Egan Inoue -- in front of 8,000 fans at the Blaisdell Arena -- and has never lost to an opponent from Hawaii.

Chow in town for Punahou event

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow will speak at the Punahou Baseball fund-raiser March 20. The event starts with cocktails at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner at the President's Home, 25 Piper's Pali.

The cost of a table (seats 10) is $750, $250 of which is tax deductible. Individual tickets cost $75, $25 tax deductible.

Boxing commission renews Phillips' license

Wahiawa Boxing Club coach Carl Phillips had his seconds' license renewed by the Hawaii State Boxing commission yesterday.

Phillips, who had his renewal deferred in the previous two meetings, got the majority of the vote yesterday when Herbert Minn abstained and Della Martin did not vote.

"I wasn't concerned because I haven't done anything wrong," Phillips said. "That was for them to sort out."

Coogan pitches five-inning no-hitter

University of Hawaii pitcher Melissa Coogan struck out four batters and walked three en route to her second career no-hitter as the Rainbow Wahine softball team blanked Mount St. Mary's 11-0 on Thursday. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

The win gave the 'Bows a 1-0 record after day one of the Pepsi-Cola Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament being played this week at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. UH is 7-6 for the season.

UH continues tournament play with a doubleheader against No. 7 Alabama at 5 p.m. and Portland State at 7 p.m. today.

Vulcans sweep Seasiders » The UH-Hilo softball team took both games of a doubleheader yesterday against Brigham Young University-Hawaii in Pacific West Conference play.

The Vulcans (10-2, 3-1 PacWest) held the Seasiders (4-6, 0-2 PacWest) to just three hits in a 2-0 shutout in the day's first game. In the second game, the Vulcan offense took advantage of two Seasider errors to take the game in five innings, 9-0.

Rainbow Warrior tennis postponed

The University of Hawaii men's tennis match at Santa Clara yesterday was postponed until this morning due to inclement weather in the Bay Area.

The match was rescheduled for 11 a.m. at the Degheri Tennis Center on the SCU campus. Due to the postponement, the 'Bows (3-7) have canceled their scheduled match against Saint Mary's, which was set for 3 p.m. today.
