'Reflecting Hawaii' exhibition opens today

The Hawai'i State Art Museum opens its new art exhibition, "Reflecting Hawaii," with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. today, with light refreshments and music by the University of Hawaii Jazz Ensemble.

Comprising two parts, the exhibition, on view through Sept. 3, features 14 works acquired through a call for artworks and 19 photographs from the Art in Public Places Collection, by 27 artists.

Would-be collectors can study up on these windows to our island home, displaying local-style humor, reverence for the land and beauty in the everyday.

The museum is located in the No. 1 Capitol District Building, 250 S. Hotel St., next to the state Capitol. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays, except for state holidays, and admission is free. Call 586-0900.

Armani trunk show

Neiman Marcus is holding a trunk show today and tomorrow for one of the store's most loved labels, Giorgio Armani. Customers will be able to take an exclusive peek at the designer's Spring 2005 collection and speak with a representative who will be sharing fashion advice in Fine Apparel, Level Two.

'Expression Session'

Artist Jon Hamblin will leads art lovers on a mixed-media journey through the exhibition "Personal Mythologies" during an "Expression Session" at the Contemporary Museum, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow.

The event is geared toward children ages 5 to 12, and parents are encouraged to participate. Reservations are required.

There will be a fee of $7 for museum members and $12 for nonmembers.

Season of Lent

St. Andrew's Cathedral presents "Reflections for Lent" during its evensong concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday St. Andrew's Cathedral, corner of Beretania Street and Queen Emma Square, with performances by Susan Purnell on flute, David Masunaga on oboe and Sharene Boulos on harp.

Led by organist Arlan Sunnarborg and the St. Andrew's Cathedral choir, the group will perform songs such as "Pie Jesu," "I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes" and "Abide with Me."

A bang-up show

Winchester lever-action rifles will be among the displays during a gun show hosted by the Hawaii Historic Arms Association, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

There will be 150 tables featuring antique and modern firearms and military collectibles, plus displays for hunting and sport shooting.

ACT audition set

The Army Community Theatre will host auditions for "The Secret Garden" at 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Richardson Theatre, Fort Shafter.

The award-winning Broadway show, based on the book of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett, will be presented May 12 to 28.

"The Secret Garden" is a classic story, dating from 1911, that has enchanted children for generations as orphaned Mary Lennox is sent from India to Yorkshire where she nurses a garden back to life and restores life to her grieving uncle and his sick son.

The musical will be directed by Glenn Cannon of the University of Hawaii Theatre Department and will star Laurence Paxton of the UH Music Department, with musical direction by Daren Kimura and choreography by Grace Bell Humerickhouse.
