Blaze damages business complex in Kihei

WAILUKU » A fire caused an estimated $115,000 in damage Tuesday night to a business complex in South Maui.

Battalion Fire Chief David Kamalani said the blaze did some $97,000 in damage to the structure of a vacant office, $3,000 to its contents and about $15,000 in smoke damage to the adjacent Alii Dry Cleaners in Kihei.

The blaze at the one-story, four-unit complex was discovered by the security guard, and firefighters took about 36 minutes to extinguish the fire after arriving on the scene at 10:48 p.m., he said.

Kamalani said the vacant unit was formerly occupied by a mortgage company, which had vacated the premises a couple of months ago.

He said the fire started in one of the vacant rooms and that its cause was under investigation.

Maui police use Taser on gun-range 'Bond'

WAILUKU » A Maui police officer shot an electrically charged weapon at a man at the Ukumehame Firing Range after he repeatedly ignored a command to halt and tried to hide what appeared to be a pistol, police said.

The man, 41, with no local address, was seen with something that looked like a pistol tucked in his waistband at 12:35 p.m. yesterday as he was walking out of the firing range, Capt. Charles Hirata said.

A police sergeant ordered the man to halt because the weapon was not properly holstered, and the man ignored the command and placed the weapon in a backpack, Hirata said.

He said the man headed back into the range, where a group of police recruits were being trained, and continued to ignore the sergeant's commands.

A firearms instructor shot a Taser gun at the man, who was later examined by medics and transported to the Lahaina Police Station. The man was released pending further investigation, Hirata said.

Hirata said a crystal methamphetamine smoking pipe was found in the man's backpack, and the weapon, a replica of a Walther PPK pistol, made famous in the James Bond novels, turned out to be a pellet gun.

Hirata said the man was not a member of a gun club, which is normally required for a civilian to use the firing range.
