Police aid bondsmen to catch fugitive

Kaneohe police helped bail bondsmen last night in capturing a 41-year-old fugitive wanted on an $11,000 felony warrant.

Corey Kalalena Young was wanted for violating probation and had a prior auto theft conviction.

Bondsmen called police for assistance at about 6:30 p.m. when Young was spotted in Kahaluu, police said.

Police formed a perimeter around Young, who was hiding between two abandoned vehicles.

"It looked like he was going to run, but there were too many of us and he put his hands behind his back and gave up," said officer Gerald Bento.

Hilo motorcyclist dies after crash with car

A 35-year-old Hilo man was fatally injured yesterday when the motorcycle he was riding crashed with a car in the Waiakea-Uka area of Hilo.

Police identified the victim as Aaron Sampaga.

Police said Sampaga was allegedly speeding on his 2003 Suzuki motorcycle while heading west on Ainaola Drive when he collided with a 2002 Volkswagen four-door sedan turning left from Kaulike Street onto Ainaola Drive.

The accident occurred sometime before 2:35 p.m.

Sampaga was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 p.m.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 43-year-old Hilo woman, was not injured.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash. Police have opened a standard negligent-homicide investigation into the crash. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

This was the ninth Big Island traffic fatality so far this year, compared with seven at the same time last year.
