Rainbow Wahine sweep honors, place second

The University of Hawaii women's swimming and diving team swept the league's postseason honors and finished second at the Western Athletic Conference Championship at San Antonio, Texas yesterday.

Nicole Mackey was named Swimmer of the Year while Rui Wang was voted Diver of the Year by the league's coaches. Melanie Schlanger was voted Co-Freshman of the Year along with SMU's Anja Carmen.

SMU won its ninth-straight title with 860 points while Hawaii had 677.

» The UH men's team finished second for the fourth-straight year at the National Independent Conference Championship in Rochester, Mich., yesterday with 745.5 points. SMU won with 1,055.5 points.

Vulcans close regular season with win

The Hawaii-Hilo basketball team solidified its hold on the West Region's top ranking with a 71-61 victory over Hawaii Pacific last night at the Mid-Pacific Institute gym

Skip Esene led the Vulcans (23-3) with 20 points. Alex Cabagnot added 14 and Brian Graham had 10 for UHH, which won the Pacific West Conference title and the earned the automatic berth in the regional.

The Sea Warriors finish the year at 10-15.

» Zach Whiting scored 19 points and Dustin Mittelsteadt added 15 to lead Chaminade to a 78-71 nonconference men's basketball victory over Grand Canyon last night at McCabe Gym. The Silverswords finish the year at 16-11. Noe Alonzo led Grand Canyon (11-16) with 16 points.

HPU splits with Cal Baptist

Jennifer Baron's three-run home run proved to be the difference as Hawaii Pacific won the opener of its softball doubleheader against Cal Baptist yesterday, 6-4, at the Sea Warrior Field.

The Lancers came back to shut out the Sea Warriors in the second game 3-0 behind the six-hit, four-strikeout effort by Candice Thomas. HPU improved to 6-2 and Cal Baptist to 7-2.

Shockers shellac Vulcans

KAILUA-KONA » Wichita State pounded out 19 hits in each of its baseball games against Hawaii-Hilo yesterday, routing the Vulcans 19-6 and 21-1 in a doubleheader at Simmons Field.

Tad Reida led the Shockers (10-0) in Game 1, going 4-for-5 and driving in three runs.

The Vulcans fell to 1-21 going into today's final game of the series, scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Sea Warriors no match for BYUH

The BYU-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams swept Hawaii Pacific yesterday in Laie.

The No. 1 BYUH women cruised to an 8-1 win with Jing Jing Liu, ranked No. 1 in Division II, beating HPU's Tina Klep 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

On the men's side, No. 9 BYUH downed No. 18 HPU 6-2.

» The Hawaii-Hilo men's tennis team defeated Sonoma State 8-1 yesterday in La Jolla, Calif.

Former Wahine volleyball standouts at QB Club

Tita Ahuna and Mahina Eleneki Hugo, members of Hawaii's 1987 NCAA women's volleyball team, are among the speakers at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Ahuna is the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball coach and Hugo is the dean of La Pietra's middle school. Also on the dais are Punahou girls soccer coach Jorge Barbosa and Jan Allen, president of the Hawaii Scholastic Soccer Federation.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel followed by the program. The public is invited to attend.

Rainbow Wahine water polo splits

The No. 9 Hawaii water polo team split two matches at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif., yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine fell to No. 1 UCLA 6-5 and defeated Loyola Marymount 9-6 to improve to 5-6.

Rainbow Wahine finish ninth in track

The University of Hawaii indoor track and field team finished ninth at the Western Athletic Conference Championship yesterday at Nampa, Idaho with 34 points.

Kelly Young placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.87 while Novelle Murray was third in the weight throw with a toss of 56 feet and 1-inch.
