Wahine second at WAC swimming

The Hawaii women's swimming and diving team won four of the seven events held yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at San Antonio, and is second to Southern Methodist going into today's final day.

SMU led the seven-team event with 607 points, follwed by Hawaii's 466.

The Rainbow Wahine's Nicole Mackey won her second individual event -- the 400 IM -- with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 4 minutes, 12.94 seconds. UH teammate Mia Broden won the 100 fly in 54.76.

Wahine diver QiongJie Huang was the 3-meter winner, while the UH team of Mackey, Katie Clewett, Broden and Melanie Schlanger took the 400 medley relay in 3:40.28.

UH golfers tie for 13th at Burns Invitational

Led by sophomore Pierre-Henri Soero's sixth-place finish, the Hawaii men's golf team tied for 13th at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament yesterday at Leilehua Golf Course.

The Warriors carded a team aggregate 294 in the final round of the 54-hole tournament for an 869 to share 13th place with San Jose State. New Mexico won the 22-team event with an 833, two strokes ahead of UNLV.

UNLV's Ryan Moore earned medalist honors with a 196. Soero shot a 68--206 for his first top-10 finish this season.

Vulcans again fall to Shockers

KAILUA-KONA » Wichita State held off a ninth-inning threat by Hawaii-Hilo to pull out a 10-8 win in a nonconference baseball game at Simmons Field yesterday.

The Vulcans (1-19) had the bases loaded with two out in the ninth only to see Gary Ahu fly out to left to end the game. Hilo closed to 9-8 with four runs in the eighth, helped by two bases-loaded walks and a two-run single by David Chu.

The Shockers improved to 8-0 heading into today's doubleheader, which beings at 10 a.m. The series concludes with a single game tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Seasiders sign water polo standout

Jim Kehrig, a 6-foot-3 utility player from Alamo, Calif., has signed to play water polo for Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Kehrig scored 118 goals this past season in helping San Ramon Valley High to an 18-8 record. He was named the East Bay League's Most Valuable Player.

Weaver, Monroe break UH records

Two University of Hawaii women's indoor track and field records were set on day three of the Western Athletic Conference Championships yesterday in Boise, Idaho.

Hawaii sits in eighth place after five event finals.

Meghan Weaver and Tasha Monroe broke their own school records en route to collecting the 'Bows nine team points. Weaver placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 13.99 meters, earning five points. Monroe posted a distance of 5.80m to place fifth in the long jump, giving UH four more points.

Southern Methodist and Louisiana Tech lead the meet after day three, scoring 39 and 37.5 points respectively. The competition continues throughout the weekend.

Warriors top Seasiders in men's tennis

The Hawaii men's tennis team handed Brigham Young-Hawaii its first loss of the season Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Warriors won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to score the 5-2 victory over the Seasiders. Hawaii improved to 3-5 while BYU-Hawaii, ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division II, fell to 4-1.
