Mato gets 'South Pacific' role

Jakara Mato received a Po'okela Award nomination for her portrayal of a teenage stripper in "Gypsy" at Army Community Theatre in 2003, and got great reviews for her performance in Paliku Theatre's production of "Big River" last fall. You may also have seen her last fall in an episode of "Hawaii."

The Iolani junior next steps forward as a leading lady in the role of Nellie Forbush in the Iolani Dramatic Players' production of "South Pacific" at Hawaii Theatre.

The Rodgers & Hammerstein classic is one of the all-time blockbusters in American musical theater. It also broke new ground on Broadway in 1949 with its muted but compelling take on the tragedies caused by racial prejudice.

Iolani senior Emmanuel Zibakalam plays Emile de Becque, with Dillon Powers as Lt. Joe Cable, USMC, and Tatiana Wilson as Bloody Mary. University of Hawaii at Manoa theater legend Glenn Cannon directs.

Almost every song is a gem, the characters' experiences are as gripping now as they were when "South Pacific" opened in 1949, and the issues raised are still relevant. Considering the ticket price, this promising production offers the experience of live theater for little more than the cost of a movie ticket.

» Place: Hawaii Theatre
» Time: 7 p.m. March 3 through March 5
» Tickets: $10 general, includes $2 theater restoration fee
» Call: 528-0506 (Hawaii Theatre) or 943-2244 (Iolani)
